Mercedes discontinuing manual trans on the SLK350
No more stick-shift for the SLK350, just like the SLK55. Apparently, they don't think there's a market for people who want to "drive" a sports car with stick-shift, and that automatic is the future. (But then again, the SLK350 was never a true sports car to begin with; more like a sporty boulevard cruiser).
It's like Mercedes is going out of their way to re-establish and ensure the SLK's status as a chick car. Before I bought my Z4M, I would've been interested in the SLK55 had it come with a proper manual transmission. What a shame. I doubt I'll ever buy a Mercedes in my life, especially over BMW or Porsche, simply because they only offer automatics. They must believe that stuffing more HP and torque under the hood will be enough.

My friend has a SLK350 with MT, he bought the V6 instead of the V8 partly because he wanted a MT. I think it's a bad idea in general. But probably MB knows the numbers don't justify keeping the MT in the US. I'm sure the rest of the world will still get a MT and more engine choices than we get.
I doesn't effect me, but in general until Lexus and MB offer a true Manual gearbox, I don't consider them sports cars. Maybe I would think differently if MB or Lexus offered a SMG or DSG but all I can see is old slushboxes even on the $400K McLaren SLR.
Audi
Porsche
BMW
all offer some sort of sports car with MT as do all US and Japanese cars (save Lexus).

it is. AMGs sell like hotcakes despite their lack of manual trannys. besides, the SLK manual tranny sucks so it really isn't that big of a loss that they are discontinuing it.

I like shifting myself. True racing cars these days aren't traditional manual anymore though. F1 paddle shifting and WRC sequentials are faster.
But for me, I like the added challenge and driving involvement of a manual tranny. I wouldn't buy a "sports car" without one... even if it was slower. Fun is more important than speed. I can't see myself buying an AMG for anything but a "family car." E63 wagon would be pretty cool alternative to an SUV... (I wouldn't want to shift that thing myself anyway).
