The new Supra - who wanted this?
#214
Saw my first new Supra in the flesh today (white). Honestly, it looked better in person than in photos. I didn't get to walk around it or anything (slow drive-by) but I'd say it's better than I expected, though not exactly pretty/beautiful. Definitely different.

Yeah that's sorta the feel I got. The proportions makes it stand out, low, good width to length ratio, bulges everywhere, if anything it does lack some cohesion and elegance. Overall I liked it, but I came away that the car designers aren't putting this up on their inspiration board.

I ran with a crowd that had ALL the Japanese super cars back in the day and have driven in each and everyone of them. Supra, RX7, 300zxTT, 3000GT VR4. Stock-for-stock the 300zx was easily the fastest in a straight line with lots of low-end to mid-range punch. The 3000GT pulled hardest at launch but ran out of breath on the 2nd half of the race. The Supra really finished every race the best once it had some time to breath. If the 300zx and Supra ran further than 1/4 mile or if on the highway, the Supra would always pull it in.
Once modded, the Supra was the king and always rivaled by the RX7. May have just been my particular friend group but I think it was the cars. Those two seemed to take to modding much better and were less complicated to work on.
As for overall performance, the Supra was great on paper and in isolation but not that great of a performer against the competition. It really needed room to breathe and IMO, it was too big and heavy for anything other than straight line runs or GT cruising. Aside from the crazy acceleration, I hated driving the Supra and much preferred the RX7 or VR4. In the US, it got spanked by the Vette in autocross cause of the Vette's tremendous torque advantage and the RX7 was so much lighter and more nimble - while in japan, it was always overshadowed by the GTR.
As for the new Supra, I don't know how a car company can outsource their Halo car. Nothing on that car transfers to any of their other cars. It makes no sense. It's not a Toyota let alone a Supra. Toyota had, at the very least, an active hand in the design language of the 86.
