OnStar wasn't developed to do any of that, and, depending on the car, GM handles these things using other systems. OnStar's OTR help functions I think would pay for themselves the first time something happened. Does anyone else have a system that calls you in the vehicle and gets you help, or any of the other things OS does?
i didnt say OnStar was developed for Bluetooth and MP3's... i know exactly what OnStar is for... what i said was that BMW and Mercedes both have a seperate system that does most of the things OnStar does (this is totally independent from their bluetooth and MP3 systems)

as far as calling you... on BMW's system, if an airbag goes off in your car, they will call you and will already have your location... they can track stolen vehicles, unlock doors, give you voice directions, concierge services, order flowers and gifts, buy tickets, give you traffic information, roadside assistance...

this is BMW's info: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Own...st/Default.aspx

but to my knowledge, they wont email you if your tire pressure is low...

the original poster doesnt want to sign up for OnStar's hands-free-calling service, since that is a seperate service available through OnStar ... he would rather use his existing cell phone over a bluetooth hands-free system since he's already paying for it... i guess you have to wait till 2009...

GM is way ahead of Porsche on this kind of stuff, and it doesn't seem to be holding them back!

OnStar was the first telematics company to make profit, and their technology is far more advanced than that of BMW, Mercedes.
OnStar was also offered in VW from MY04-05, and Lexuslink is also developed and serviced by OnStar.
You guys would be surprised to hear what an OnStar module can do.

I dont disagree that onstar is cool, BUT, i don't want to pay for a cell phone that i can only use in my car.
Take NY for example. it is a law that they must use a handsfree kit while talking on their cell phone. how much nicer is it to walk in your call and automatically connect and be able to talk and dial.
all while being in a nicer car than a GM product (right now)

BTW, when i am in a porsche, my cell phone is the last thing i want bothering me.

OnStar is MUCH more than a cell phone, that's the mistake in your logic.

The capabilities are pretty impressive, but I let my initial free subscription in my Avalanche pass b/c I don't think it's worth the monthly cost.

Yeah, I agree.
Even though I do think the features are great, monthly payment is killing it.
If GM offered free subscription until the warranty expires, that'd be great.

flaw in my logic????
so now even you yourself have decided to not pay for onstar, so what cool features do you have? a blue button?

THAT is my point.

I have onstar now in my van, guess what, it is just a button that i NEVER use.

i never said it wasnt a nice service, but if you dont pay for it, you dont get it. Period.

What is the difference between a car with onstar, but no subscription and a car without onstar?

what is the difference between a car with bluetooth and one without?

the article i posted makes it pretty clear that GM agrees with me.

OnStar does nothing for me, only b/c I don't see the value for the price...but comparing it to Bluetooth vs. the phone embedded in OnStar underestimates the many other features in OS. BTW, there's nothing preventing OS and BT from co-existing.

As to whether GM agrees w/ you, the article said nothing about GM elminating OnStar, just adding Bluetooth. I still don't think OnStar is holding GM back, even though I'd be happy to delete it for a $500 savings.
