Poll - EVO or STI?
I'm not an S2000 owner, but I am considering it along with the Evo and STi. I've driven the S and the STi, but not the Evo. At this point I'm leaning toward the STi.
One thing that never seems to come up in these Evo vs STi debates is reliability. It seems to me that most, if not all of the STi's (very) relative shortcomings can be modded out if desired. How are you going to mod Mitsubishi's build quality out of the Evo?
Neither car is going to have the reliability of a n/a Honda, but for $30K I want something reasonably robust. I'll be the first to admit that I have little personal experience with either marque, but Sube seems like a much better medium/long term bet to me. Considering how close the Evo and STi are in performance, I think that's a major issue.

sacrifice performance for reliability. go STI if it's more reliable than EVO. you wont need extremely performance every day.
also, my friend just blew the 5 speed transmission of his 03 EVO GSR on the racetrack. be aware of MIT's quality.

Having driven both the old and new STi(I) and an Evo 8 MR, I'm torn. No doubt, the Evo was the better driving experience, it simply blew away my expectations. I expect the Evo X would be even more impressive.
But if you're going to buy a car like this, likely your choice is influenced by a desire for day to day practicality. IMO, the '08 STi wins big on:
- room - the 5 door HB of the new STI is cavernous. No other vehicle on the market has such a great combination of performance and cargo/people capacity. The Evo X, OTOH, has a pitifully small trunk and non-folding seat.
- interior appearance
- reliability (esp. unknown on the Mitsu w/ all the new tech.)
In summary, I'd grab the Evo keys for a romp on a track or a hill country run, but would prob. sign the papers on an STI for a long term ownership experience of a car I'd have to live w/.
FWIW, much of the STI's relative handling disadvantage can supposedly be cured w/ a $500 investment in Cobb sway bars.

I just picked up an 07 STI Limited, to replace my GS400 and complement the S2000. I considered both cars (but have only actually driven STI's), and although the Evo is cheaper and in some weird way I still miss my 2G Eclipse, the choice was easy for me.
Check out the limited if you prefer heated leather to fun-boy blue, and a reasonable trunk lip spoiler to the traditional shelf you see on STI's. The Evo had me in terms of aesthetics until I realized the limited was an option. The only thing I don't like about my car is the big, square, fugly taillights that you see on all imprezas.
Note: had I been planning to replace the S2000, I would have driven an Evo before buying and the decision may have been more difficult. I am quite certain I still would have gone with the STI though. If you are the kind of person who is going to replace the entire suspension anyway, I suspect the difference in handling between the two would be negligible.
