Pulling trigger on 335 coupe.

sorry guys, the S4 quattro is NOT FWD biased, nor FWD based. it's the quattro system in the TT and A3 that is FSB based. (Torsen vs. Haldex)
it definitely is heavy though.

You are correct! Thanks for that education!
It was my poor assumption due to the recent switch to 40/60 bias and the nose-heavy handling.
But you are correct that the Torsen AWD is 50/50 static split on our S4 and then adjusts depending on conditions.
[QUOTE=CKit,Jan 2 2007, 05:08 PM]It killed me when she opted for an automatic S4.
She's leaning towards an auto 335 as well.
Her argument is:
1. BMW's manual gearboxes aren't as nice as the S2000s and I'd be constantly comparing them.
2. With the new torque converter and electronic rev matching of the BMW auto, there's not much performance degredation in the auto, esp if you brake stand to launch
Any thoughts?

Any thoughts? I prefer manual, but if there really is no performance decrement... and it's HER daily driver, is it worth a fight?
Seriously though, if she's the one that's going to be driving it all the time, it should be her choice. Though the Honda transmission reason is just grasping at straws. You'd be complaining more that it's an auto rather than complaining that it's not as nice as the S2000's. Weak argument.
As for Quattro (Torsen), it is one of the best AWD systems out there. Audi and Subaru have the best, IMO.
I've been reading up on the 335, and the auto is state of the art, esp. w/ the paddle shifters...better by most accounts than the SMG. The 6 sp. MT, OTOH, doesn't come anywhere near S2000 standards. Considering the intent of the car as a fun daily driver, I'd seriously consider the AT. I enjoyed test driving the 6 sp., but unfortunately no auto was available for a demo at the time.

Well, I went 9 months without car swapping.
Kept lusting after the 335 coupe after driving it a few months back....
Tried to resist.
Tried to resist....
Test drove again with the wife.
She liked it....
Hemming and hawing....
Upgraded some parts on the S2000.
Tried to resist.....
But the 335 is such a fantastic car....
I've decided to trade in....
My wife's S4!!!
Wooohooo!
We'll wait until winter passes to pick it up, it'll take a little time for the car to be made to spec.
I wouldn't trade my S2000 for one, but I've been trying to figure out a way to get one into the garage.

Good choice. Can't go wrong with it.
I'm surprised though as to how many people would get it with the auto tranny. I know there are practical reasons to consider but the real fun is rowing your own gears. Sure, it's not going to be as slick as the S2000 but a short shifter kit helps quite a bit.
