i sat in one last weekend.
the fit and finish was pretty good for what it was.
if i still lived in seoul or tokyo, it could be a good option.
but i can't imagine driving this thing in the states.

My wife loves these cars, and wants one badly. Since we regularly drive 350 miles to/from northern WI in all weather, I keep telling her that we couldn't make a WORSE choice for a third vehicle (we've got a Liberty and an S2000 now.) I commute 4 miles, she commutes 19. Unless it was a fourth car (2 DDs, S2000, Smart,) it would be absolutely idiotic. We've already got one impractical stupid car (S2000) we don't need another.
Based on what you've said thus far, it sounds like you are thinking rationally. It's good your wife doesn't want a benz instead, but driving that vehicle in bad weather or for long trips is like using the s2000 to tow a camper.

She also likes old FIAT Cinquecentos; I'd much rather get her one of these for about 25% the price of a SMART. If the new FIAT comes here, in Abarth form, I might buy one.

well, it rains in Europe and the speeds are higher in Europe... compared to American standards, people drive small cars all over the highways there... but alas this is indeed a city-car... this car was never intended nor marketed in Europe as the most fuel efficient car, its niche was all in its small size... you can fit 2 Smart's in a standard size parking spot...

this can definitly come in handy in NYC or other urban areas... other than that, its just novelty... but im definitly glad the Smart's finally here...

I've got one. Great car even if it is boring a hell to drive. Overall average of about 47mpg and still running fine with 147,000+ miles on the clock. Still 47mpg with diesel 40 to 45 cents more than regular makes me think about having a gas burner for a DD. The Smart doesn't run on Regular though does it?

I wonder what the crotch-rocket powered Smarts get as to fuel economy? They sure look like fun though!
