A buddy of mine was shopping them (and a few other roadsters) and I posted the same question, I'll find my thread (there was some good info), and just as an FYI, he wound up with a Z3.

Any way to say swap in a Corolla XR-S engine? Has anyone done that?
Yes, people do it all the time and it's a great swap with huge power gains, especially if you start doing bolt-ons.

The MRS has the 1ZZ engine stock
The Matrix/Celica GTS engine is a 2ZZ

If you do bolt-ons or forced induction to a 2ZZ MRS it becomes a monster since the car is so light. I *think* I remember swapping in the 2ZZ alone reduces the car's quarter mile time from like 15.x seconds to low 13's.

Swapping a 2ZZ is like home-making your own Elise, except it doesn't handle as magically.

IIRC early model year ('00-01 maybe) MR Spyders had some issues with catastrophic engine failure, resulting from something I can't remember.

it was precat failure in which the material inside the precat gets sucked into the engine. Other than that the 1zz is bulletproof, swap in a 2zz and your golden.

Ahhh, nice. I was looking at these cars and if the price was just a liiiittttlllleeee bit lower, I would have loved to buy one and find a wrecked Celica GT-S/Corolla XR-S and swap the engine into one of them.

my room mate has one, and he daily drives it as well.

I absolutely love driving this car.. he still has the 1zz in it, with plans for the 2zz swap, but waiting to find out more information on the 2gr swap build that's going on right now.

It doesnt have near the power the S does, but its a blast to run through a few gears and not be horribly illegally breaking the limits.
It feels completely different throwing it around turns than the S as well. It seems to break physics... haha.

I do prefer the S. the interior is better, i like the styling better and the motor of course.

All you do is gut the pre-cats and you wont have any issues with the motor, on the 00-01 models.

They make the Solstice seem practical when it comes to trunk space. Some vids of modded MRS's.

I've heard of people swapping K20s in them. That has to be awesome.
