Bummer! If it was at the engine bay end, that would be easy.

As the outside temperature slowly climbed up to the 80's, I finally looked under the hood and traced the operations of the knob to the valve. Seems the cable is not moving a lot when the temperature setting knob is rotated. I think the cable is probably coming loose at the knob end and it will cost big bucks to disassemble the dash to fix the cable. For now, I just manually set the valve to turn off the heat (the valve still moves). I guess I will manually turn it back on when winter comes.

Thanks, xviper, for all your help with this.
I had the same gen Accord. The knob is a very common item to crack and break. Just pull the knob off and see if it is indeed cracked. If it is, then just replace it. Should work as good as new. Let me stress that the plastic knob that you turn to change the temp is almost ALWAYS the culprit. Friend also had that same problem, 93 Accord SE. His knob broke twice! Cheapy plastics I tell ya.

Part 11 in that diagram is what I am referring to. $5 to replace.

Thanks. Are you saying that I can just pull it and it'll come out without disassembling the dash? I'll give it a try (again, when I have time, this is not a very high priority item for me since the temporary fix is working fine). Thanks a lot for your suggestions, Douglas.

the knob is the likely culprit, and cheap to fix. Do that first. It just pulls off. If that isn't the problem, it is the assembly behind it, which probably isn't all that hard to remove, if you have the patience of a saint and the tools of a carpenter (no miracles should be needed, just an assortment of screwdrivers).

Thanks for everyone's help. I spent $5 on the knob and now everything works fine. Thanks again.
