Thoughts on the STi

Um...the evo is suppose to be a better handling car while the subie is less harsh. I think the Evo MR is the best buy of the bunch; its supposed to be more comfy then the regular one.
Why not just get a Evo RS and buy the same suspension and wheels? That will give you pretty much the same thing sans the 6 speed.
Also, the STi is not exactly less harsh. Rags dont tell the full story.
Ill let you know this... STi's aren't for sale because of problems... In fact, they are MUCH MORE recommended/reliable than EVOs...
They all have their ups and downs... there are plenty of threads on this.
Look around though... Subaru is ranked very high on quality/reliability.
I like the STI's styling better. The only thing is that you can buy a WRX and throw some groud effects on it and make it look like an STI. It's harder to do that on an Evo. Also, how many STI's have been sold vs. Evo's, does anyone know?

I'd say just like I say to everyone else...
if you are really questioning both of these... just go out and drive them both and make up your mind yourself...
You can use the argument that one has cheaper parts and its easier to make power in but in reality they are about the same FOR MOST PEOPLE. Lets face the reality that most people wont ever see more than 325whp on a EVO. The EVO will most likely need a clutch before you ever reach that power... the STi can go well over that with the stock clutch. Doing a clutch job on the EVO is an expensive and time consuming process.
Anyways... STi is worth the money. I think its a great car. To me the biggest issue with the EVO is reliability.. because to be honest, the seats are better (the whole interior is not better though , the wheel wells allow for big fat tires and aggresive offsets for a dished wheel, its got a nice quick steering... awesome car. At the same time, the STi has almost NO boost lag, its got a nicely styled interior and is overall a very nice choice.
I'd personally take the Sti over the Evo (driven them both) since the Sti feels a bit more 'grown up.' Though, I would try to lose the rear wing as it's a bit too 'rally boy racer' for me. Then again, I understand the heritage and the wing does fit with the Sti image. Anyway, the Evo feels a bit better from a handling perspective, but from a quality and overall reliability standpoint, I'd trust Subaru over Mitsubishi in general. Plus the 2.5L displacement over the 2.0L displacement gives more low-end and less boost lag.
I'm rambling, so I'm signing off.
I'm rambling, so I'm signing off.
I don't mean to piss anyone off, as I love both cars, and I'm obviously biased towards one for my own reasons... But a good number of STi people are trading for... yep... you guessed it, Evos... why? I couldn't possibly tell you, like I said, they're both great cars, with an equal amount of problems and with a fairly decent chunk of money you can make them equal to each other, give the Evo some more power and give the STi some better tires and some suspension work. Then there's also the group of kids who buy both Evos and STis and realize 6 months later that they can't afford all the costs involved and get rid of them for something like the Legacy or a regular WRX and this group is larger than you might think.
I'm sure there are other reasons too, including the most likely one of that there are many more STis on the market than Evos, but from my experience on EvoM it's pretty much as stated above.
I love the Evo over the STi, mainly because of the looks. A lot of people are picking it because of the ease of modification, but COBB is ten minutes away, so an STi would be just as easy to mod as an Evo for me. Then there's the whole handling which car is better and acceleration and all that BS which doesn't matter a whole lot to me. There's the AWD and 4 doors, which the STi has too (though not as much rear seat space but slightly more trunk space) and there's the sound of the turbo which the STi also has. Oh, and because every Dick, Tom, and Harry don't have an Evo but there are tons of STis and I like being different. In short, I just like how the Evo looks compared to the STi (I really can't handle that giant hood scoop, for starters)
Anyway, what else... what jsalicru said is true, if you're debating between the two, go out and drive them, simple as that. And if you can't find an Evo to drive (as dealerships tend to be pissy about letting people drive them, for good reasons) find someone in your area that has an Evo, 99% of the time they'll at least take you for a ride.
As for the MR being the best buy, there are a lot of people that think that, but IMO the MR is the older man's Evo, as, like you said, it is more comfy and the 6 speed helps save a little bit of gas. But for a few tenths of a second on a track, is 6k really worth it, especially since if you're really track racing the suspension is gonna be outta there pretty quick and then you're left with the Vortex Generator thing, BBS wheels, and a 6 speed tranny. MRs with the SSL package (sunroof, upgraded stereo system, and leather interior) make this even worse... I feel like saying "thanks, go buy an M3." Again, totally owner pref though.
As for the RS, they're great, especially for a track car, but the first thing you gotta do to one is buy the spoiler, too many people complain about weird handling over 95 mph without the spoiler, and many people who track race and have been determined to stay wingless have gone out and bought spoilers.
Speaking of spoilers, that's the other thing between Evos and STis, the STi one isn't quite as functional as the Evo's and some people complain about shaking/rattling problems of the wing at high speeds
And Quikag is 99.9% right, which is probably another reason I picked the Evo, I don't want an F-ing 'grown up' car. And if I did, I'd have the Legacy 2.5GT. The statement about reliablity and the lack of the .1% are combined, it depends on what you're talking about, the most important part (the engine, duh) is way more reliable on the Evo, but... pretty much everything else is more reliable on the STi. And the 2.5 over the 2.0 definitly give the upper hand at low end, but with the ease of modding the 4g63 it doesn't take long to change that, 'course by then an STi will probably be faster too... so... yeah... better at low end, they definitly always have more torque with equal mods.
That, in short...
is my advice to you all.

I think the STi is worth the money, and so does the EVO. Which one you choose to go with is entirely up to your own taste. But from the performance point of view they are both big bangs for the buck, kinda like the Z06 of Japanese cars.

WOW, I couldn't disagree with you more. The MR is wayy overpriced. Get light wheels (that you will want to change), softer suspension, and little look at me pieces and thats worth 5k+ to you??

When I was looking for a spirited family car, I found that there were more similarities between the two cars than differences. The STi was too small, and the EVO did not have (when I was looking) cruise control.
Therefore, the XT was purchased, I think it (read
T) would have had tons of competition from the new Legacy GT (wagon) if it were out when I was in the market
