Thoughts on the STi
[QUOTE=AbusiveWombat,May 19 2005, 02:13 PM] Maybe it's due to the following (I'm not trying to start anything here):
Between the two the fastest track car is the EVO
Between the two the fastest 1/4 mile car is the EVO
I'm talking modified cars here.

The evo engine has been out for a lot longer in dsms than the sti engine has been out period. Thus, there are a lot more parts available for it, and these can be obtained for a lot cheaper (from what I've been seeing...not just reading). The sti market is still developing. Give it another year or 2 and the sti will be a great car to mod.
Although I do drive a wrx, I'm not really biased towards subarus over mitsubishis. I was actually planning on trading in for an evo at one point, but the thing that has driven me away from mitsubishi is it's customer service/warranty. All the subaru dealers here in socal have their own speed shops and they will mod your cars for you and/or work on your cars while still keeping the warranty intact. If you are planning on modding, I say go with subaru because of the friendly customer service and friendliness towards modding. Mitsubishi has been anal about this and it really is a turn off.

I loved mine and would buy another over an evo for a daily driver/track car. They are sooooo easy to mod now, more than when I had mine. Interior is fine, not as cheap as people think it is. It is very fast, all the car needs is a stiffer rear sway bar, a cobb access-port chip and turbo back exhaust and you will have a MONSTER!!! not the same style as an S2000, but nothing is, you and 3 girls can wave as you dust almost every car out there.

I like the STI over the evo for about 12 million reasons, but as of recently.... My biggest thing against the EVO
Why the hell would you buy a car from a company thats in a shit hole, that is trying to beg for money/ideas from its bigger companys, Mitsubishi has to be the worst car manufacturer on the market, THey have horrible customer service, they offer a warranty that I think they void if a bird poops on your windshield and give you an excuse "the bird poop added aerodynamic problems, causing excess stress on the drive train, causing your engine to explode". Their cars are also driving pieces of shit, odd how mitsubishi was the ONLY japanese car manufacturer to NOT make the top in reliability in any of the category's.

Id say your a bit biased and wrong on multiple fronts but Ill let you stay biased. Faster in a quarter... stock... lol
But keep talking about Evo Vs Sti on the drag strip. Thats fine with most of us... you dont see Sti's on the drag strip becasue they are mature owners who dont think strait line racing is much fun (besiades the fact that the cars arent made for that). At my local AutoX course and track day, I see 10 times more Sti's there then Evos... and spank on them most the time.

B) Yep, Sti owners are more mature... pahahahaha... the number one car to cut me off and drive like an ass around me: STi, followed by 350z
C) Take a look at sales of both cars, there are probably 10 times as many STis in the states than Evos, and more Evo owners are dumbass kids who spend every penny on the Evo and keeping it running, whereas STi owners are guys/girls who can afford the car and a life and autocrossing and track days
D) The reason you see so many Evos on the drag strip (at least here in Salt Lake) is because most of them have come from dragging DSMs
E) Subaru has 10% of the chance of restricting warranties for racing than Mitsubishi...
If you're looking at both, go drive them... if you don't have money to pay for repairs on your own, buy the STi hands down, a COBB stage 2, some suspension and tires and you'll have one hell of an awesome car (trust me, COBB is local, I know LOTS of COBB STi and WRX owners)
The reason the Evo takes the STi in most of the mag tests is the tires, simple as that, the Advans are sticky as hell, and are also toast after 3-6k miles, but these things are ultra close to R compounds. Guarenteed if you strapped 235 Advans on both, they'd be so similar people would wonder why people were picking either one over anything than looks. And the STis REALLY take Evos at Auto-x because of their low-end advantage.
I hope this sounds like I'm promoting the STi, cuz it's supposed to... I love my Evo, and the number one reason why is because I think it is one of THE best looking cars on the road, and when I compare it to the STi, that's the ONLY reason it beats the STi
Just drive both cars and see which one you like. For me, the STi has better built quality, and the car suits well for daily driving as well as tracking. The EVO is a better car for modding and track use (imo). Even in Japan, the fastest modded street cars on the track are mostly based on the EVOs.
I don't know why I post this crap:
1st Annual EVO vs WRX shootout 4/25/05
(in short EVO's dominate sweeping 1st, 2nd, and 3rd)

EVO vs WRX shootout 9/11/04

Maybe I'm biased....
EVO's take top 18 spots!!!! 9/11/04

I'm sorry but there aren't that many STi's in the 11's. If there were then these shootouts that happen across the country wouldn't be so lopsided. And this isn't just STi vs EVO, it's open to all the WRX's as well. So you can't make a claim that it's lack of development.
Ohhh but these cars are not ment for drag racing...
One Lap of America: 2004 and 2005

2004: EVO wins class
2005: EVO places 2nd in class to the SRT4(although the STi probably would have won had it not crashed)

I will say it's a much closer battle on the track then at the drag strip. Comparing track or autox times is a little tough because it's so highly dependant on the driver. Some areas I hear the EVO's dominate and some areas I hear the STi's dominate. A good driver can make any car look good. I've seen a Mazdaspeed Protege beat my friends Z06 which certainly doesn't mean the MSP is the better track car.
One other thing. The clutch in the EVO is not as bad as everyone would like to believe. I'm at 30k on the stock unit without any problems. I'm not the only one:

Ohhh and a new clutch is ~$400 (ACT) and install is $400-500.

Have you seen the stock rubber on the STi's? They make the S2000's S02's look like all season tires. I don't think that's the difference.
