[QUOTE=NECurve,May 25 2005, 07:12 PM] I have spent significant time behind the wheel of AWD vehicles at AutoX events...the Sti was NOT impressive in the handling department.
I've heard that the evos aren't all time AWD. Is that true?
Not true. '03 EVO's are full time AWD. '04-'05 EVO's have a computer controlled center diff (like the STi's DCCD in auto) that decides where power is to be sent. Someone on here stated that when no slip is deteched then it's FWD...not sure if that's true or not. Either way it doesn't really matter. The EVO's AWD is a very capable system.
About that understeer. It takes a different driving approach to drive a AWD car.. especially coming from RWD.
No.
The Sti understeers quite a bit, but not quite as much as the S4. I would not call it a pig, but for me at least it is just not an entertaining car, slow (yeah well by comparison to the turbo anyway), heavy feeling and a bit ponderous.
The EVO is in my view the much better handling car, with the crappier interior. As much fun to throw around as the S2k and a bit faster too -- albeit with a solid roof.
My 996 turbo is the only AWD car I have driven that does not handle like one. Understeer is hard to get into unless you are really trying, and at all times your right foot can correct the issue -- i.e. you can get enough power to the rears to make them spin.
Auto-X times are not a solid basis for judging a damn thing other than driver skill. Road courses on the other hand can be used to demonstrate power. The only guys I see running down the straights with the 911 turbo's are Z06 vettes and your occassional modded C5.
Quickag, stock for stock the turbo is going to outlap a C5. Better brakes, a bit more rubber and a slightly more balanced setup. I've passed turbos and corvettes in my Integra Type R -- you just never know how far the other guy is pushing at at open lapping days. Most of the Porsche BMW and Corvette guys tend to pussy foot around.

I would say that pure fun factor the S2000 is hard to top. The STi is fun in a very different way. It is nice to be able to floor it going into a turn and feel the car squat down and just blast you through the turn like you are glued to the road. It is always a little nerve racking in the S2000 at 10/10ths. It will outhandle the S2000 though, you will feel the extra mass and weight. It is great on the highway, kinda nice to have passing power without downshifting.
I agree. It's like an apples and oranges comparison. My Turbo VW is very fun and even faster than my old S2000 and I find myself much more confident in hard turns. Almost any car can be fun in it's own respect.
Holy smokes....half the people say they are not biased...well, be a man and admit to it...you ARE biased.
I am on my 2nd STi....I have driven plenty of EVO's....the EVO is a better handling car....period. But...I cannot get myself to stay inside the car for more than 10 minutes...the interior is hideous (this is subjective, I am sure). Also, the outside of the EVO...is one of those things...you either like it or you hate it. I fall on the second category.
Both cars are "cheap"...quality is not to the par of an S4 or M3...period. Anyone that argues this point is absolutely blind and hence should not be driving nothing but a bicycle.
