Uncontrolled acceleration
Does the Prius really have a neutral ratio? I mean with a manual or normal auto neutral is simply a position where none of the gears are engaged. I would assume with the HSD the gears would never disengage. Instead you would just modulate the electric motors so they could free wheel as the gas motor was stationary or idling.
i only read through page one, so if someone already said this i'm sorry.
on the newer prius's they have a DBW shifter, and a push start/stop button, no key inserted like on our cars. my question is can you select neutral or tun the car off while in gear and moving. cause i highly doubt that he could call the police, be on the phone with them, they send a patrol car to help, and the whole time neither he or the dispatch would think to put it in neutral.

It happened again:

Weird that two Prius' did this within a few days of each other. I don't know if they were the same model year, the one in NY is an 05. Maybe Skynet really is taking over.

I thought the problems with the pruis' were due the the brake regeneration system, when did it start having problems with unintended acceleration, I suppose that every accident from here on out is gonna be attributed to unintended acceleration, great excuse for every noob that crashes their car.
The guy from SD must be trying to get attention.
The 911 operator repeatedly told him to shift to N, which he never did. The officer pulled up along side him and told him to shift to N, he shook his head no.
Also, to clear some things up:
- the prius does not have a steering lock, shutting off the motor would not have locked up the wheel.
- even shifting to P or R above 3 mph will only result in the car going into N. He basically could have put it in anything but D and the car would have rolled to a stop.
This guy's story has way too many loopholes.

The guy clearly didn't know much about the Prius but that's understandable. While the Prius doesn't have a column lock (as stated above) it is a common feature of most cars. However, I believe you can also turn any car off without engaging the lock. The Prius doesn't shift into any gear. I think reverse is electric only on a Prius. Basically shifting wouldn't have done anything like locking the tires. Of course what we don't know is what caused the UIA. The driver was likely making maters worse but perhaps the car is still the cause of the problem. Or the guy might be lying.
