I think a couple year old CTS-V might fit your guidelines, except it gets terrible MPGs.
Unless he's 65+ years old, probably not going to fit his criteria.

Test drive a G37, it's a great car.
How about IS350?
Does Cadillac check ID's when buying? Where did this 65+ age limit come from?

Ok, 65 is pushing it, but still... Caddy = old people car

Unscientific Forum Poll shows 52% Caddy owners are 41 or older
May 2010 article showing average age of Caddy owners are 58 years old

Despite the CTS-V being a fun car, the image associated with it is that it's an old man's car. Just like how Civics are associated with teenagers and college kids.

what about a Pontiac g8gxp? 6.2L V8, RWD, 6Spd manual.
If I wanted to know what it's like to drive a bathtub, I'd just go start a bubble bath and make engine noises.
Really? This thing has gotten great reviews and there is lots of options for mods. I think it matches your specs pretty closely. It is sub 4k lbs. just barely but it is less. 415 hp and yes the 6speed is rare but your can find a 5spd. Just saying and its a great looking car. It does sound like the BMW is the car for you though.

Not sure the GXP would be a good car for him. Its a BIG car, larger than a 5 series Bimmer and he seems to be interested in 3-series/IS sized cars. I wouldn't say its like driving a bathtub, but it is like driving a large sized car. It is quick though. Especially with the LS3 with mods and an M6. There is no 5speed (except the auto in the V6). The GXP is slightly over 4k, i think 4050, but the GT is under 4k. And you are correct, they only made about 800 in stick. Great car though.

There is no way the G8 is bigger than a 5 series. They are about the same size maybe. I have been in both and yes they are both on the larger side but the G8 isn't much bigger than the CTS. Also to me it sounds like he knows what he wants he just ha his reservations about the 335 due to cost of ownership. Not much you can really do about that though. Its the issue with every single car that comes out of Germany. They aren't cheap to buy or fix but there is very little out there that can touch it in terms of performance and comfort.

I did notice that he did not list any of the Merc's that could fall into this but again I am not surprised since they have the worst rep for cost and reliability except for maybe Jag.

Sadly for Merc I think they have also largely fallen off the radar of most buyers who aren't in the S-class price range. In a thread like this people are quick to suggest Audi A4, BMW 3 series, IS, G37, Caddy CTS/ATS even perhaps a Chrysler 300 or Hyundai Genesis or Volvo S60. It seems like the MB C class is the car no one thinks about. It's starting to get the same old man feeling that people assigned to Buick. "It's nice for my rich grandmother but I don't want one."

Perhaps this is for a different thread but is MB just off the radar anymore?

Vee Dub CC?

V6 Lux = $32,850 | 3,600 lbs | 17/27 mpg

VR6 4Motion = $41,420 3,800 lbs | 17/25 mpg

Sharp looking inside and out. Both models have a 6 spd tiptronic gearbox.

They are actually making some of their best stuff ever. I think the problem is that they are being undercut on price (and total cost of ownership) by a lot of very good competition in the North American market and for the past few years, price has floated to the top of everyone's priorities. Luxury goods makers have taken a hit across the board at the entry level. Not so much with the S class buyer.

Wow. Just wow. There's ignorant, and then there's just plain stupid. This is an example of the latter.

What about the E90 328/330 with the N52 NA straight 6? It fit's the bill on all accounts except minimum horsepower.

I strongly disagree. The only issue I see with MB is that they don't put a lot of sporting effort into their cars unless there's an AMG tag on the rump. The base offerings are lacking a bit and the selection of vehicles with available manual transmission or DCT transmissions are sparse. You have to spend the big bucks to get into something pretty exciting. That being said I would choose most any current Mercedes Benz over its BMW competition without hesitation as I cannot stand BMW's styling these days.

Agreed. The G8 is a great car that outperformed the BMW 550i in almost every measurable aspect. (Pontiac put out ads comparing the two, hehe).
