E60 BMW 5 Series

I actually cross shopped the BMW M5 with the G8 GXP. The G8 was surprisingly MUCH bigger than the Bimmer when you sit in it. I was shocked at the rear seat room in the G8. I actually also looked at the new CTS-v, but there was not enough space for what i needed.

Under 4 seconds is just nasty in a mid-sized sedan.
1 series sedan. New a3, not sure if its 3/5 door only. A class Benz. Hoping these will be out by mid 2013. Current Golf r. When the mqb platform comes for the gti/golf r/a3 expect big improvements. Im personally waiting for the fiesta st or mazda2 speed if they ever come.
A3 = If I remember correctly, they only come in a hatchback and are a bit undersized for me. I believe the 1-series is their direct competitor, and neither of those two cars are on my market list.
Golf R = awesome styling with decent power, but again, too small and the hatchback is a dealbreaker for me.
Appresh the suggestions though.
if the grill on the TL is what is giving your chubby a limp feeling, heres what you can get to fix that

looks pretty damn good to me now

But it's the "beak" bumpers on the TLs and (on the rest of the Acura lineup for the matter) that really kill it for me.
I am in the same boat as the OP. The S2000 has to go sooner than later, and I am having a hard time finding a mid size sedan replacement.
I am leaning towards a new 328. The new turbo 4 is pretty powerful, I like the fact the engine is tucked behind the front axle for better weight balance, and it gets good gas mileage. I think this is the best option available, and I am in the same boat as the OP, and share many of the same opinions after reading the thread...

I might consider waiting for the 2nd MY of the new 328s for BMW to work out the kinks and to hear if there are any issues with the turbo/plumbing on their new 4cyl engine.
Really? This thing has gotten great reviews and there is lots of options for mods. I think it matches your specs pretty closely. It is sub 4k lbs. just barely but it is less. 415 hp and yes the 6speed is rare but your can find a 5spd. Just saying and its a great looking car. It does sound like the BMW is the car for you though.
But to be honest, if I were shopping for a car in the full-sized class, the gorgeous new 5-series would unequivocally get my vote.
Appreciate the suggestions everybody. It's great that after all these years, S2ki CarTalk is still the same (if not even more) vibrant community with true enthusiasts and great ideas.
The only issue I see with MB is that they don't put a lot of sporting effort into their cars unless there's an AMG tag on the rump. The base offerings are lacking a bit and the selection of vehicles with available manual transmission or DCT transmissions are sparse. You have to spend the big bucks to get into something pretty exciting. That being said I would choose most any current Mercedes Benz over its BMW competition without hesitation as I cannot stand BMW's styling these days.
