Yahoo's 10 Buy and Hold collectibles?
My browser automatically brings up Yahoo news. I typically have to laugh at their car related features. At any rate, this one got me thinking about it- which car, available now- is destined to be a future collectible. From what I can see of their list, only one- the Alfa 4C- truly qualifies in their list.
Here is the link- https://ca.autos.yahoo.com/news/10-f...205028393.html
The way I see it, a future collectible- that is new today- has to be
1. an engaging driver's car, with minimal computer intrusion to deaden the experience.
2. it has to be made in relatively small quantities- a mint condition camry in 30 years will still be a camry subject to depreciation and will only be worth $500.
3. have a manual transmission option that was chosen by few buyers- the above alfa ONLY comes with an automatic. What cars on the auction block command the highest prices- the manual hemi cuda is worth far more than the automatic cuda. Again, this comes back to the engaging drive arguement.
Now, back to the yahoo list. The only BMW- that was relatively expensive when new, but then depreciated substantially and is on the upswing again now- is the E30 M3, hands down. Original condition E30 325is' are rapidly becoming classics as well. I can see the 1M becoming a classic as well. But the M4 convertible- meh. What does a used E36 M3 convertible go for now? not a future classic.
4. Has to be a game changer on the automotive landscape- the 4C is relatively affordable, but brings advanced chassis construction to the masses.
The new corvette is an excellent car, that i really want to drive. Future classic with the Z06 option? maybe? I don't know about that Camaro or Mustang either.
The Hellcat Challenger I can see becoming a classic amongst the hawaiian shirt auction crowd.
If I could make my own list of cars i've seen come along in my 42 years that i wish I had the forsight to buy, enjoy, keep low miles, and preserve as stock, it would be these.
1. '03 Honda s2000
2. Honda s2000 CR delete
3. Last generation Supra Turbo manual
4. '94 NSX- sunroof delete- i'm a little foggy on which year they had this option.
5. Acura Integra TypeR
6. Datsun 510
7. E30 M3
8. BMW 1M
9. Honda s600
10. GM Typhoon, Syclone twins
11. Buick GN, GNX
12. Omni GLHS
13. BMW 2002 Tii
14. Porsche Boxster spyder
15. Porsche 911 RS America
ok, ok, 15 cars is a little ridiculous for my top 10, but i just couldn't stop.

Wow... A convertible M4 made it? Look at convertible E46 M3s. Least desirable compared to coupes.

The list has some decent choices and some ridiculous ones. I could see the Hellcat being a collectible and maybe the 4C. Z/28 is going to be collectible, for sure. Golf R? Maybe due to none will last longer than 10 years so finding one in 20 will be tough! The rest were pretty silly - they're not that rare, they're not that special, they're not really giving you much that other cars can't give you as well.

Aside from the cars already mentioned:
Pontiac Solstice Coupe.
Cayman GT4 especially if the MR porsches become more of the driver's car and the 911 becomes more GT.
Upcoming GT350R.
Maybe Boss302.
MKIV R32.
2002-2004 Mustang Cobra.

Oh and this is more speculative:
Tesla Model S.
First and maybe second gen Prius.
First gen Honda Insight.
1991 Mercedes E Class Non turbo diesel (you know, the 1,000,000 mile car).

Hmm, maybe very early Mitsubishi Eclipse? Someday there's going to be a bunch of middle-aged guys who will want what they drove when they were punk kids. Bonus points for rooftop pizza-delivery signs.
The one on Bring A Trailer right now, bidding at over $28K already... I'm thinking "too late".
