The choice of worrying about things disproportionately, yes.
But is it really an informed decision, or just jumping on the latest hysteria bandwagon without looking at the reality?
I think we really know the answer; conventional wisdoms are invariably a distortion of the situation.

Well, we know modern cars are generally safer and you have the NCAP rating system on top of this.
The reduction of the likelihood of a crash for newer cars at the prices quoted is probably immaterial, but the chance of survival/reduction in serious injuries will be significantly better.
How much weight is placed on these factors is down to the individual. For most jelly heads perhaps not, but the OP isn't a jelly head.

We DON'T know modern cars are safer; I'd argue they can be more liekly to be involved in an accident. We are TOLD they are safer by the vested interests.
Probably, if you are lucky enough to hit another 1,100Kg vehicle travelling at the same speed, they are a lot safer.
If it's a 2,200Kg SUV travelling at 30 mph, that will likely overrun the bonnet, a four or five-star NCAP rating will make very little difference at all.
I might be able to squeeze past up the bank in a narrower, old three-star design.
