Still not convinced by the R8 personally. It's striking, but it's not beautiful. Looks too much like a TT that has been sat on by a particularly weighty elephant. And I don't like those LED sidelights at all...
And for anyone to think a C4S is the pinnacle of motoring
this entire thread could easily go so wrong in my opinion the R8 is a fantastic looking car,but i love most top range audi's.What bore's me is standard, identikit low level entry porsches.I've read the opinions of a few such owners that have made themselves sound like utter cocks. It's amazing how the name porsche makes some people feel as if they're something special.I spent a fair bit on an '07 S2000,but make no mistake. It's nothing special to anyone other than me and you guys.I feel no need to "impress" anyone.
I am looking forward to seeing the new V10 R8 (or R10 if they call it that).
The R8 is 'just' the baby, and the V10 version will be awesome IMO.
I personally prefer the R8 over the 911 due to the numbers of 911's out there.
I have always loved the fact that the S2000 turns heads when you drive past due to it's rarity and great looks.
The R8 has striking looks, will be fairly rare due to the limited supply and is an original looking car. It looks awesome in the flesh, and has a gorgeous interior, especially the visible gear shift gate.
To me it's no contest at the moment.
Maybe Porsche need to be a little more radical with the next 911. As much as I loved the return to the 993 'look' with the 997 the shape is getting a little tired after so many years. Still a fantastic car though and I wouldn't say no to one.
But, give me

VAG have done with the R8 what they do with all their 'big' releases and kept supply low to maintain desirability/price so if you'd been on the ground floor and got your order in nice and quick, then you have effectively a years depreciation free motoring ahead of you. Which would be nice.
As for opinions on it, I haven't driven it but I do think it looks good, although it's very colour sensitive and can look awful in some colours (first thing I'd do is have the carbon fibre section sprayed to match the rest of the car, which I believe is an option). Certainly different to the ubiquitous identikit 911, and anything that tempts people away from the safe and predictable choice at that level is a bonus in my book.
It will be interesting to see how they depreciate once Audi's manipulation of their market peters out in a couple of years (remember the tools that bought LHD Beetles and TTs so they could be first in their street to own one?) and the market sets the true value second hand. It might then be a very easy choice between Audi and Porsche....
