Audi know their market, like BMW
There was a Fifth Gear feature on the R8 that was fairly insightful
iirc they were saying the R8 wasn't designed for petrolheads
the typical buyer isn't interested in trackdays but wants something they can open up on the road every now and gain whilst having plenty of perceived status - the R8 ticks all thos boxes and will get the right nods at a beancounters' convention or the golf club
if you look at the car like that, you can see why many people choose them - BMW don't offer any competition at that level, the black Mercs are a bit gangsta and anything else a bit flash or fragile or both (911, Maser, etc)
hardly anyone on here would choose one for their daily car if they had £100K to splash because most here want something different from their car
in addition, a £100K daily driver does suggest a different lifestyle to most on here

Wouldn't take it near a track, but would happily blast across Europe in it with the Mistress

I do think Audi made a great car, and it's clearly sold well. But it's doesn't quite met most people's idea of what a supercar is.
It's a hard habit to break - I knew a property developer (bit sort of tough start to riches story) and he never got round to buying the 911 dream car he'd always promised himself.
But you cannot take it with you either...

I agree with most of the reasons above for not buying an R8 (If I had £100k to spend on a car, I wouldn't spend it on (that) one...)
I'd also throw in looks.
To me the R8 looks about 6 inches too long in the wheelbase, this may be due to the blades as I don't think the convertible has the same issue.

That's very true.
I think the blades are a contrivance designed to make it look arse-long, just like the 1930s Auto-Union racers whose heritage it claims.
There should be a twin-supercharged V12 like the Typ-D!

Oh, the vulgarity! Unlike the Hindenburg, they don't have the good grace to self-combust.
That is, and always will be, the problem with that type of car. It's the buyers they attract, not the machines themselves.
