If I was going to through 2k at a beater to run round in for a few months or so i'd look at salvage, stolen recovered or Cat D.

Some bargains to be had, go for a Focus TD, Astra TD or similar. Ireckon you should get 03 ish for less than 2k leaving the rest to put it right if required.
I looked at a salvage place near me earlier as it happens, some were cat c and some cat d what's the diff?

basically cat d = written off because of bodywork damage which was uneconomical to repair (parts + labour) & cat c = written off because CHASSIS damage which was uneconomical to repair (parts & labour).

so for the majority of cars, cat c = bigger accident than cat d and also harder to fix which might mean it's not quite straight and handle a bit oddly.

In brief

Cat C means heavy in most cases, it has `This car has been involved in a serious collision or/and has had extensive repairs' written on the front page of the V5 ... yuk!!

Cat D can means no damage upto light damage but the insurance company decided not to repair for what ever reason

Avoid Cat C if possible, if you did buy one buy a cheap number plate or swap a plate off another car and the V5 warning gets removed ;o)
