I haven't owned one. I was in Pwhelli last week and stumbled across one, in fact parked next to it. I'd actually forgotten all about the thing (like hot Saabs) but you kind of admire the big space, AWD and hot hatch worrying figures. I know you like your Q car stuff, we can only wonder if the R is destined for classic status and if it's worth a punt on one.

Rightly or wrongly my perception is that they are uninspiring anywhere bar kickdown, pretty much like Saabs (of which I do have some experience). I think I'd have to be really impressed by the drive to overcome the less than exciting image and those negative perceptions but it might be a wild card.

Keep us posted on which car you decide. I am looking for an 'uglier' estate for daily grind. The s4 is faultless but I think some of the cash is better served in other things and consequently looking for a sub 10k load lugger.

All on radar. Worst case I go back to what I know, ie pissrat but like to try different things.

Is it my perception again or isn't that where we would find Volvos and Saabs? I'd have thought paying more would be financial suicide.

My future daily estate considerations to date have been V10 M5, V10 RS6 and C63 Merc.

If it's something to be used and abused then I wouldn't spend more than a grand or three. Hence why I've had (and liked) Omegas in the past and why I've just bought a Rover Tourer for less than a grand. Fully loaded and cheaper than hiring a van for the next three months while I clear crap from the houses we're selling.

At the end of it all the net cost will probably be less than a week's van hire with none of the inconvenience of picking up/dropping off/worrying about damage.

I just need a flat cap.

You could flog that on to fishy

My only experience of rovers where in the late nineties when i began working. We had a pool car at work and it was unbelieavbly fragile. Maybe a 75?

Then the ball and chain got a red petrol one as a company car, i reckon a 200? Astra sized thing. Wouldnt start when it rained, it was brand new!

I recall sealing the plug leads with a spray.

She had a 220D after that which was much better, it was actually quite quick for what it was.

There's a lot of usable metal knocking around for not much £

If you scrap the Rover, you can get a boggo Volvo estate for absolute buttons.

Boring to drive, but very good cars.

A friend bought a whole succession of ones like that (tends to do big annual mileages) simply because he got fed up with the depreciation on brand new ones.

I will probably do that, given that van hire would be £200pw and it would be a pain to park etc. I doubt I'll go through six Rovers or Volvos in the six months I'll be shifting stuff. For a one off I can get a half day van hire for £30 or so. Mostly I shall be shifting smaller boxes and tip stuff. Whether I can resist tittifying the car is another matter.

RS6 for a daily - brave.

Nissan Stagea - those are pretty quick and reasonably cheap, almost shed money depending how fussy you are. But once you get bored of boost whilst lugging grandfather clocks, i can't see the attraction.

I'd like something useable but with some comforts as it wont be just a load lugger. I'd like leather heated seats as it will be a daily grind car, 25 round trip x 5. That's about all I ask of it (and it to be reliable).
