on my 95 civic, i went with an active ariel.
vastly improved reception over the built-in passive unit.

not sure if the skoda is active, but maybe fuse has blown/power wire is no longer connected?
maybe the cable has become disconnected on the back of the radio?

More details please.

Does the Skoda have an amplified shark's fin like other vages? If so, check the power supply to it is on & the connections back are good.

If we're talking DAB/+, I understand the vages moved from a sharksfin to a window jobbie & there's little one can do other than drill a hole in it & put in a proper twig.

It's an 02 Fabia estate analog head unit and what I would call a normal arieal about 18" length

Yes, the earlier cars had a regular twig.

There may be a screw on the back of the headset in order to attenuate it; you could try that.

Since accessing the twig means losing the rear of the headlining, you might want to run it down to your local ICE centre for more diagnosis/fettling.

Basically a powered replacement twig. Might as well get a DAB+ HU while you're in there!

Cheers I'll have a look on the back of the headunit. I can't do the rest as there are no ICE specialists up here in Shetland and also no DAB

There's no DAB anywhere; they have the transmitters turned up to 0.

Actually, that may be your problem; they're turning down the analogue to force you to buy a DAB+ unit.

Even though there's no DAB in Shetland...

If the zombies are involved, it's bound go wrong.
