Could the barrel not just be removed and replaced?

Probably, but you still have the imobiliser problem to overcome.

No; you then fire the barrel (both preferably) at the ECU.

If you have the space, it could be worth buying them purely to strip down and sell off in parts. Then buying a good-un with the money you make.
