WTF is it about Jock racers in Helicopters. I can still remember when Steve Hislop crashed.

It's not just the Jocks....

Not quite so famous but I remember Bertie Fisher's death well because I was standing near him spectating at a rally about a week or so before.

Goes with the territory of being flown around in a helicopter frequently I suppose.

I'd be quite interested inthe accident rate of such things.

Very sad to hear about this

The inquest into Steve Hislops crash is due to open soon, as there were far too many questions over what caused him to crashed. The main one being that the rotor blades hit the tall plane, inplying there was some kind of downward draft, maybe caused by a fast jet passing overhead.

Ah f***! Not him too!

Looks like it might have been him, his son, a mate and the mate's son...that's even worse!

As for reliability of Squirrels...pretty good...modern helo, well designed. But helos are an inherently risky design, and if you're not in the right circumstances (i.e. have altitude and airspeed) and are still quick with the emergency procedures, then they're not 'fail safe'...

My abiding memory of the man is towards the end of his tenure on the WRC. He crashed his car badly on one of the stages and broke his thumb. He had to have it cast and strapped up, and over each and every bump it caused him excruciating pain and started affecting his times.

He told the doctor to amputate it!

I'm recording the Scottish news at 6:25, which is covering the story. If there's anything worthy I'll youtube it for everyone.
