Seems these particular cameras have a variable reliability record.

May have a look at a MiVue.
I have been looking at the MiVue and the only thing that puts me off is that people are saying that it cannot be hard wired in which is ideally what I want.

I ran the cable up through the headlining and down the A pillar to the fag lighter ... all i do is unclip the camera when leave the car - it's not the sort of thing i'd want to leave on show anyway, some scrote would just break in and pinch it.

Happy enough that the 'hardwiring' is the wiring and the mount

Interesting, I have one of the Wedge cams (http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2014/10...am-review.html)

It hasn't crashed once, starts every time - Maybe I was lucky with mine. I like it a lot more than the Mobius one I have in my other car as it starts instantly and you can quickly glance at it to see if it is recording. Both are hardwired in so they come on with the ciggy lighter ignition power.

Good call on the Mio MiVue 518.

I purchased one from a local Halfords; they matched the online web price of competitor.

The form factor is not as good as the Elephas A118C, but it is definitely more intuitive to use, it works, and importantly, has a Mac OS X native application which is actually rather good.

As an added bonus, it also has the GPS receiver integrated into the unit and that is one less bit of crap to stick on the windscreen.

Whilst there appears to be no hard-wire option per se, there are plenty of hard wire kits with Mini USB connectors available.

The Transcend DrivePro 200 seems to have good reviews - granted not £50 but not a fortune either

I've got the MiVue 518, works very well and as you say having the Mac app is a bonus. I've got 2 cars to use it in so hard wiring the mini usb then being able to move it from one car t the other suits me.

I have one of these, I need to raise the rear camera slightly but it works well,

This is some footage, YouTube have reduced the quality but even that is perfectly clear,

http://youtu.be/WJ9LyT5F92A

You can turn the GPS info off, It has a mic which is clear but very not very loud on playback, Boost the audio and it's fine though,

The motion detection works pretty well as well,

Came with everything needed and even a Samsung memory card,

Mobius for me. Smallest camera I could find and thus in my eyes most discreet. As previously mentioned, card only comes out if needed. Mounted via a Scosche magnetic magic mount means removal is easy if required.
