[QUOTE]Diesel prices could rise by up to 50% if proposals by the merchant shipping industry to switch to the fuel are approved.
That could push prices at the pump up to

Hmm, something tells me it won't quite happen like that. The article is suggesting it will happen overnight. I'd bet it will be phased, and thus supply could keep up.

I'd laugh for days if this happened...
It means the price of a barrel of oil would (potentially) soar.
Petrol comes from these barrels of oil as well so both prices would rise.
Incidentally, why is diesel more expensive than petrol? I always thought that diesel was more "primitive", i.e. the oil needs less "work" done to it to make it into diesel than petrol which needs more "work", refining etc...

It's to do with supply and demand. There is only so much capacity for refining diesel. As demand has risen in recent years, the price has risen accordingly. If demand increases massively overnight with all merchant shipping using it, then the price will rise. This will affect diesel and not petrol. The fuel shipping currently uses is refined from the same crude, so the price of a barrel of crude won't increase but the price of specific fuels will.
I'd laugh cos I fecking hate diesels.

my Dad just sold his canal boat. good timing since canal boat diesel was half the price of car diesel but very soon the benefit is being lifted and it will be car prices for canal boats too.. not that this will impact things but a trend..
