I remember driving one a few years ago and I was completely underwhelmed by the experience.

I swapped from an S2k to an E46 M3 Coupe. Better cruiser, engine is brilliant, sounds amazing, great for drifting, overtaking. It's more "road biased" than an S2k. If you go on track the weight makes itself known. I got rid after a couple of fun years because of the large bills. M tax is a real thing with 75% of the parts unique to the M3.

The manual gearbox is a bit clunky, especially after an S2k, but I recommend against an SMGII, as they're a bit jerky unless you're in full attack mode and some people have issues with them (more than with the manual box). The look the dogs bollocks on CSL wheels.

I'd say go for it unless you plan on doing a lot of track days. They're a hoot, but have a firefighting fund or a warranty, and make sure one you get isn't due an Inspection II service any time soon.

I watched the car throttle M comparison vid (seen here), which re-ignited my want for an e36/46 m3. Cant bring myself to sell the s2k though.

Instead, I randomly bought a 1998 328i on Saturday! Not quite the M car.. but a solid 18 year old..

I think if it's just a fun car I would keep the s2000. Unless you need more space.

I replaced my s2000 for the e92 and like Notts says it can do everything the S can but you have to be really on it to make it as enjoyable which is hard on the road.

Dont do it.

Your last comment sums it up. Get a caterham or an elise. An M3 is a compromise. Its a dad's car for me.

I still might flog it and buy something else this year as the missus bought a feckin qashqai +2 after being obsessed with me having a "family car".

Get a Z4M if you must have a sixer

A dad with a smile on his face though

Maybe the dct box does make it more enjoyable?

im not a fan of the z4. space is always a plus i suppose and having a bit more luxury and more usable power would be good. But in the end it comes down to how it makes you feel. I think for the time being i will keep the s and see how the next year gos. As soon as we have a nice spring day im sure having the top down and hearing her scream will make me feel better .
