e46 m3 or s2000
I had a Z4M and now have a Z4 35iS .... I hated the Z4M gearbox and clutch so it went after 9 months ! The engine was superb but the car was not, to me, interesting to drive. The new Z4 with a 3L turbo putting out similar power to the Z4M is far more fun ! I can't knock the 3.2 straight 6 in the Z4M but the car (and I guess an E46 M3) with that gearbox would put me right off !
Haha Winny i've seen you make similar comments on cutters
The DCT is definitely funky tech but once you get your head round the heavy shift i cant see how an auto would be more fun
A lot better in traffic i'm sure haha

it makes it feel more special maybe, which could make playing on the public road more entertaining even though you're not exploiting the cars full potential?
It feels really aggressive rattling through the gears on full pelt in M mode with the flappy pedals.

im not a fan of the z4. space is always a plus i suppose and having a bit more luxury and more usable power would be good. But in the end it comes down to how it makes you feel. I think for the time being i will keep the s and see how the next year gos. As soon as we have a nice spring day im sure having the top down and hearing her scream will make me feel better

Agree with everything said here (except, jml, no apostrophe needed
)
My experience of the E46 manual convertible M3 I had to drive for a few weeks was, I felt relieved to get back to my S. Scuttle shake, sh*te gear change. The E92 frankly is not much better as a manual convertible, plus it drinks petrol and has f*ck all boot space. But that was then and now is now and, if I had a 3-car garage, there would be a stock S in there for summer silly days.
What I am saying is that, if I were you, I would keep the S cosy over winter and carefully choose an E46 coupe as daily driver. Especially over winter (what winter
) I would not miss the constant twitchy bum keep your eyes on the road (surface) driving style that the S demands. That said, it's not been cold enough for winter tyres yet on the E92 and, the summer Michelins being new rubber and the E92 very sure footed, I might skip them this saeson.
Come summer (if global warming allows) if you have to choose just one then you would have had a good long trial.

I know...believe it or not i got it right but the spell-checker got the better of me.
Personally i do tend to keep cars - not beaters of course - as i do have the storage space and the means although i admit i probably don't have the right area code.

I drive a van daily so havxing both is out of the question
. I would only get the coupe with a manual box as well as i have heard bad things about the smg box and the extra weight of the m3 ragtop. I think for now i will stick with the s. Now planning a road trip through europe at the start of summer

I watched the car throttle M comparison vid (seen here), which re-ignited my want for an e36/46 m3. Cant bring myself to sell the s2k though.
Instead, I randomly bought a 1998 328i on Saturday! Not quite the M car.. but a solid 18 year old..

If rust free (have you cleaned out the rear arches?) it would be worth keeping. It's a desirable model and they will never be cheaper.
Let me know if you have any glitches - I've done a lot of work on 323s recently so might be able to help. I've found Eurocarparts to be a good source for parts. They had and may still have a new battery with three year warranty for £30 (with voucher code) recently.

.The gearbox is not as good, but they vary from car to car. It took a bit of time to get to it but for me it doesn't detract from the driving experience and 343bhp makes it feel pretty rapid.
