Why is it meaningless? The S2000 was quicker than the rather more expensive Boxter, fact. I know it was a different driver, but it was a dry day for both runs, and even allowing for VBH being one to two seconds slower than JP, that is still a fantastic showing for the old girl!

One or two seconds over a 45 seconds lap is a huge difference, with that sort of difference in drivers you are not going to get a meaningful comparison.
The only proper comparisons of this sort I've seen are on the Mark Hales 'How to drive...' circuit guides where he always compares a Caterham and a 911 with a running commentary explaining exactly where each gains and loses. Very technical and nerdy but there's no room for speculation.
I suppose it does prove that a well driven S can keep with a 911 but take them off the track, which they are not built for and put them on the road, which they are built for and everything changes.
