Had an R53 Cooper S a few years ago, great fun, quite nippy, good handling. Petrol was horrendous around town driving though. Only other gripes I had with mine was the host of seemingly electrical problems, windows would intermittently work and need a brief tap above the door speaker to get working again, the run flat warning light coming on because the speed sensors were prone to going, and also the rear boot handle switch needed to be taken out and cleaned every few months..

If you WILL buy a German car built by the British...

They've now got a 5er hybrid with the hybrid system linked to the satnav, so it can determine the optimum power usage. God help us; it'll probably dead stop on the M25 when the sats drop out or go large over Beachy Head...

You are missing the main point. The S is exciting because of its handling characteristics. When you go into a corner a little fast it is that slight apprehension which makes it exciting. You drive every journey waiting for that kick in the teeth, that moment, that rush. You end every journey with a smile because for that trip your driving skills were adequate to tame the beast, next time they may not be. This is what makes the S much more fun to drive than a Mini ( and Boxter), they get you to where you want to go but don't make your juices flow or thrill you every day.
Good luck with the mini but after a while you will just think of it is a car. There is nothing like an S.

Ridiculous!!
I am glad that I did not come out and admit that I bought an SLK200 and a diesel CRV to replace the S2k and that both of them are more pleasant to drive and cheaper to run.The S2k fascists would have had a field day.
As much as I miss the S, life changes and so do transport requirements.
Good luck with the Mini.

Would now be the time to admit that I looked at some....SLK's before I bought the S?
I like the +04 revision

Disclaimer:
I do have some grey hairs though so surely that's okay?, no? They have that warm air 'neck scarf' too, mmmm toasty.
Never seen a single one with the roof down though, strange that.
