The Formula 1 Thread - 2011
Ok the last 10 minutes of quali was interesting but that circuit is another that fails to excite and the race? will probably be the same depending on who gets the best start. Is it time for F1 to have Indy car type wings/bodtwork to encourage close racing and overtaking?
On the Button/Hamilton front, LH may have the greater ability as a driver over JB, but he often is not the complete package, red mist or whatever takes over and results suffer, JB makes the best of what he has and gets on with it hence the positions in the drivers standings, my 2p worth.

Yes despite the three-way championship finale last year, it was still a dull race. I was really glad to see they've put Brazil back as the final race; it's just a shame the championship is already over.
It's one of the worst circuits on the calendar, in terms of boring races ... however once again Hamilton out qualifies button, I believe that is 13 - 6 in favour of Hamilton this year ... something like that.
I am hoping that Hamilton or Button get the jump on Vettel else he will scamper off into the distance and I will fall asleep.

Hmmm... I'd say it's Vettel and Button, based on points. I guess it might be different in something like football, which is a less points orientated system. Example, George Best or Gazza have been considdered the best in their respective era's, but often got pissed and underachieved. The individual ability was there, but becuase it's a team sport, it's difficult to judge on results. A player can have a blinder but the team lose. With F1 drivers championship, the champion, ie the best driver over a season, is the winner. And Hamilton has had very few actual car issues this season, so it's mostly his performance that's to blame.
Just to contradict myself, one of the F1 drivers (Indian chap) just said drivers should only be judged on equal performance, ie at their best, and he did point to Vettel, Hamilton and Alonso. I'm not sure I buy that because unless you can consistently deliver, you aren't up to scratch.
Anyway, I quite enjoyed qualifying.

Vettel is still an unknown quantity for me.
Of course he is a bloody good driver, but it's hard to say how good whilst driving that Red Bull. He has two titles, but for me he is still untested. I hope he is as good as the results would suggest.
One thing is for certain, he is better than Webber by a fair bit.
I rate Alonso and Hamilton right up there as in my opinion they are the only 2 drivers capable of winning a drivers' championship in a non championship winning car.
I rate Button, but I would not be able to apply the above statement to him.

Button has been great this year, but hardly brilliant over his career.
He did have a really bad early career, with some really shit cars though. It's clear now that with a decent car, he will do well. Nearly everyone could see his potential though. I take my hat off to him for not complaining very much about all that. He was also a baaaaw hair away from not having an F1 seat a few years ago, oddly enough.
I do often wonder what would happen if there was an F1 lotto, and for instance Senna or Alguesari got a race in the Red Bull... just to see. The fact is that all these drivers are pretty damn amazing.

I'll admit, I don't really like Hamilton.
However, he is very fast and i'll remain impartial whatever happens.
You can even ask the Mrs that I was calling for Massa's head during Indian GP after he turned in on Hamilton.
He has been a bit....well, a lot, of a dork during this season and for whatever reasons he has, i'm convinced that none of them involve Jenson beating him.
However, I still remain of the opinion that Hamilton doesn't have the mental agility that is currently required in Today's F1.
He likes to think of himself like Senna, and he does drive a lot like him, except Senna's driving talent was the icing on a large cake of skills.

If one thing is for certain it's that the best driver of the best car wins. I can't think of the last time the championship was won by an inferior car.
Anyway, back to the race at hand, the two Macca drivers are within 0.009 seconds of each other. Based on laptime, that works out that they were within 0.01% around 3.5 miles.
