That video is pretty clear isn't it. What they showed on Sky had Vettel passing under a solid yellow light, which apparently doesn't mean don't overtake but was a warning that there was a red/yellow slippery road flag. You'd think Alan McNish would know that.

The stewards can't watch 24 cars all the time, so maybe it just took a while for this particular example to come to light, and they certainly had a lot to look at in that race.

I will bet that the telemetry will show that Vettel was shaping to pass after the green and that Vergne lifted briefly giving Vettel no option but to pass.

Aside from the championship issues here, there have been too many incidents of drivers not respecting a yellow flag situation this year, whether in quali or in the race. They are putting marshalls' lives in danger by not backing off when there is a waved yellow.

So if Vettel is found guilty I think he should take the penalty, regardless of the effect it has on the sport's reputation. The only strange thing is that no-one picked up on it until now.

No doubt because Vettel is the F1 media poster boy right now he'll get away with it. The rules are very clear about no overtaking under yellow flags, and he broke them.

Which means if FIA think "oh, Vergne was lifting off" then it's still Vettels fault, with what, 100metres to the green light.
When you want to be number 1, you get greedy... And with the fact he was smashing his way through the field from the back, Vettel just got careless there.
There's no other option, 20 second penalty will be enforced by tonight. I will be chaotic for F1 if FIA don't stand by the rule book, there will be a legal case launched by Ferrari just watch. Unless Alonso is the big man and accept defeat by this.
By the way Heinz57, its not about being an armchair fan my friend, or if you've raced. Rules are ridiculously strict in F1, and it creates threads this long! Bit of a silly pass away comment in the other thread if I'm honest

I did the same overtaking move at a race and they gave me 3 points on my race licence.

There is absolute no excuse on overtaking under yellow, he will/have to be penalise without any investigation needed.

I can't see the championship changing hands. It was clear to everyone and his dog in 1994 that Schmi rammed into Hill, and he kept his title.

Same will be here.

And if you think the drivers give two sh1ts about the Marshalls when they are in that car....

Which is why it's gotten very strict under yellow flag overtaking, it's not safe... Marshalls have been killed in not just f1 but other race sports. Oh, and it is cheating!!

If you look at the video, Vettel passes after a green flag is waved at the Marshall post. End of debate - Vettel is 2012 Champion.

Flags waving before the green light. Flags overrule lights.
