Default Future classics

name what you think will double, triple, quadruple in value in the next few years

Has to be a mainstream, mass market car, currently available at under £3K (original list price irrelevant)

there are lots of equivalent precedents:

you couldn't give away Mk 1 Escorts and Afa GT Juniors, not so very long ago

further back, think about the DB6, E-type and even humble MGA

I'll tell you mine - the XJS

that's why I've just bought my fifth

I've now got two V12 convertibles, two 3.6 manuals and a V12 coupe

cost me under £10K for the lot

I reckon I'll see them triple in value in four years - without spending more than peanuts on them

I have always had a soft spot for these, used to have the use of a V12 coupe as a work car .... lovely.

I wonder about the preludes, Mark I or II only

PS LB here

I've always liked the XJS soft top..reliability and the cost of parts put me off buying one. Are parts still expensive for this car?

depends on which bits you need and if you are after new or s/h

s/h parts are cheap and easy to get

V12 engines are very long-lived if they have been looked after

3.6 engines were used in XJ and daimler saloons so are plentiful

body panels no problem but a rotten car is a breaker at present values

Tricky one with only £3k and "mass market":

Ford Cougar
Lexus Soarer V8
Mazda RX-7 if you can find one for that price
Mitsubishi GTO

Actually, they're all crap so let's assume there's little out there that won't be forgotten quickly.

Have to say I'm somewhat dubious about the XJS.

A friend of mine's father replaced his E-Type with one when they first came out and I've never forgotten my disappointment when he picked us up from school in it for the first time.

Another friend's father bought one of the last Jensen Interceptors as couldn't stand the XJS - a decision I was a lot happier with

I really don't think the styling has ever worked with the UK public, and the car has never really been looked on with any great fondness in this country - I think we all felt cheated and that it was designed for the US market. Bear in mind around this time the MGB acquired its hideous black rubber bumper on behalf of our American cousins.

I suppose the above is subjective to a degree - you will understand it's not a car I've ever liked very much. However I do think ever soaring fuel costs may strangle any increase in demand for these cars.

Anyway, we will see, and I hope for your sake I am wrong and you are right

As for my own suggestions I'm struggling to think of anything that will appreciate to that extent in such a small amount of time. I do think, in the light of my fuel cost comments demand for "classic" GTis such as the 205 GTi will remain strong and certainly if one were to buy a good one of those I don't see you making a loss at resale.

XJS as an investment hmmm, you'll only make on it if the value of scrap metal rockets when you come to weight it in

For me something it would have to be something that represent the last of a bread, something we wont see again, but i cant for the life of me think what at a 3k price point.

the thing with mk1 (and mk2) escorts is that they are easily modified and made into something interesting

a good shell often ends up with a cosworth motor dropped into it

RS Fords have always had a strong following due to the perceived motorsport heritage and were made in relatively small numbers

hence the prices

i'm not convinced you'll see the jags generally treble in price within 4 years

of course, that really depends on the condition of the cars you own and how much you paid for each of them

BMW E30 325is?

Porsche 944?

VW Golf GTi Mk 2?

I can see people turning to older cars for fun as new cars have to be greener and increasingly dull in order to be runnable without breaking the bank.
