Future classics
I've been making a tidy sum on cleaning up Mitsubishi GTOs. There is a huge appetite for clean, non chavvy ones.
Never seen such profits in such a short period of time in second hand cars. The nice thing is that all the interest is coming from 'mature' buyers who are a pleasure to deal with.

All the old Fords are in demand, see Classic Ford magazine. (I do every
month). Huge scene, not just for us with rose tinted glasses.
Funny though I once had a two year old 280 Brooklands and they are
still around the same price.

Moreover, where has the market stabilized for the MX5's (old shape). Expecially 1.8L air-conditioned models?
Capris are cheap (apart from RS2600, RS3100)
and a completely original 1979 3.0S i saw recently
best condition car of that era i have seen for a long time, but i digress
compared to an RS whatever, a 2.8 injection represents good value as an affordable classic
think they have a bit of stigma attatched to them though

for me the stigma is attached to the XR2 and XR3 (the original clit cars) are the cars with stigma
RS turbo has more cred
but the Cossie Escort (which is in reality a shortened Sierra) is king chav and I wouldn't be seen dead in one
anything with an RS badge that is rwd attracts a big following
RS turbo escorts are increasing in price but most are properly chavved with chrome bits under the bonnet (i hate that) and more jewellery than Mr T
RS turbo Fiesta hasn't got much of a following
The capri was the european Mustang remember and always had a bit of an issue in the style stakes in the performance car arena from its beginnings
I don't think it ever lost that image

perceptions are interesting
i wouldn't be seen dead in a jag xjs
for me they represent the pipe, slippers and beard brigade
there was nothing special about them when they were new and were a mammoth failure for Jaguar
never a sports car and not very pretty
i always saw them as a car for fat, cigar smoking, golf club attending, jewellery ridden, middle aged, carpet factory owning, look at my beer belly type people
or their wives (slightly less embarassing if the driver was female)
convertibles were the worst of the worst
e-types are a thing of beauty and go well
the xjr was a good car and that is where i would put my money (very cheap at the moment)
the xjs may be worth a punt as an investment but i would never consider driving one
an escort cossie on the other hand...................
horses for courses

it's a GT not a sports car
although the smaller engined manual models aren't too bad to hustle
a V12 XJS is also a fa better drive than a V12 e-type - the e wouldn't see which way the XJS went because of better damping and brakes
but we go back to my point about how these cars will be used - that is, cruising and posing
I fully accept that if you fancy yourself as a driver, then you'll plump for some turbo nutter job
