Rather refreshing advert from Toyota:

You're actually meant to enjoy driving it.

Just watched that Chris Harris test .... you'd bin an S2000 if you tried to drive it like that over lumps and bumps unless you have catlike reflexes. He did seem to enjoy the GT86 though and when you watch the way it slides around you can see why - that's now 2 cars you own that i'd quite like Mr Graves

Just watched that UF, good shout. Clearly softer, more friendly setup than the S.

I can see where the price concerns come from but it will be cheaper to own than a 350/70 and we all pay running costs.

Prefer the black though

Just looked at your pics again, Nick.

Looks really very nice.

I'm sure there will be tuning options too! Only thing which might grate is the apparent lack of cabin quality. Acceptable at 20k, maybe, but not at 28k

I've said this before but one of the nicest cars I've ever driven was the Doris' Celica 140. Oddly I never really felt that lacked grunt, it was a very nippy car, handled great (very well damped) and had a nice gear change. I bet the 190 was fun... If the 86 is a step up from that, which it will be, I can see the Doris being after one of these.

Hmmmm.

Cheers all.

The Toyota warranty and the existence of dealers - not to mention the existence of cars - had a lot to do with going for the 86.

The car is a lot more compliant than an S2000 - it's more like a Prelude (or NSX!) and I had no hesitation in ditching nanny on the test drive on a damp road.

Chris Harris is not exaggerating - it's really that easy. Part of the problem is the press has hyped too many cars that aren't much fun, so now there is one that IS fun, it sounds completely overhyped. They've used up all the superlatives.

Toyobaru perceived quality IS a rung lower than Honda - bits are flimsy. But that's how they' ve kept the mass tolerable and the interior suits the car's slightly retro style. It's a bit like the original MX-5 in that respect, only one is reminded of a Capri or twin-cam Celica or something. As I hate modern interiors, with theor tart's bouidoir style and rubbish ergonomics, I actually prefer it!

The ability to get a good driving position and to see past the pillars (the quarterlights are retro brilliance!) make up for flimsiness elsewhere. The Toyota Touch thing is a modern frippery that is actually easy to use.

Any pics of said interior ?

I used to drive my boses old celica 140 when it was brand new , it was a dreadful car compared to the 2.0 prelude 4th gen I had at the time , the prelude was better in every area bar equipment level and was 10 years older.
If the gt86 is more like a prelude it would be hugely tempting

I had a close up look at one for the first time yesterday and liked it.

Small size probably quite suits me these days, and liked the simplicity of the interior, yet pleased to see a few gadgets ie for the most common journey I do which is 100 miles of fun followed by 100 miles of dull A road and M-way the car would be great on the first bit with enough to keep me entertained on the uninteresting bit that followed.

Simple thing, but the folding rear seat to open up boot space I liked as well. Last time I owned a 2 door car with that feature it was a Morris Minor 20 years ago

Hassle free ownership appealing when set against other more exotic stuff I am looking at right now.
