I can't argue about the 1.8L lump. It did rev nicely, but wasn't quite what I expected when I got to VTEC. How can you tell if it was a B-Series engine or not?
It started off as a 1.6 B16 in the VT and CRX (B16A). Later Civics were up 10bhp to 160. (B16B)
CTR had 170 B16C).
The B18 appeared in the 'Teg.
It was eventually stroked to 2.0l for the CR-V(!). Obviously, not quite so sweet.
Tuners like to combine the Red top head with the CofE block for serious power.
With better gasflow, the B is quite easily tuneable. A few aftermarket bits and a B16B whould make around 180!

It seems it's impossible to make a car handle like that any more, which is why they will be sought-after.

As for price...for what it does it's not unreasonable - here's a car that out-182's a 182 on the road, but with Jap build quality, coupe looks, a fantastic driving position and a much better 'box. And a huge boot. To my mind it's arguably the perfect affordable all-rounder, so long as you don't need to transport 4 adults regularly.
DEFINITELY get one (best car I've ever owned, including the S2000! Hell, probably the best car I've ever driven, maybe excepting that Superlight...). Just be prepared to spend a fair bit if you get an old/tired one - bushes do a lot of work and hence wear (and there's 40 of them around the car!), gearboxes seem to get looser with time, and as with all fast Hondas stonechips are a sad fact-of-life.
