Under the scheme, an in-car "black box" device calculates premiums based on when, and how often, the car is used.
I wonder if your premiums will get multiplied every time you exceed the speed limit?

Good solution to the problem of unaffordable insurance premiums for the young.

I'm thinking it could work, and be a good solution to those with short commutes etc.
I just worry about it becoming "compulsory".

I'm very worried about the data that they collect on you too.

Imagine you have to make a claim and the data from the black box says you were doing 33 mph in a 30 zone at the time of the accident. Mr Insuranceman would try his best to wriggle out paying.

The scheme could also be a back way in for pay as you go rather than paying a yearly road tax.

and how long will it be before all insurers move to this model........
With the alternative 'normal' policy being hiked in price.

I am guessing the device uses GPS to record location/speed/time data and then the GSM network to communicate back. So you do have a side benefit. It would save me a tenner a month to my tracking service. Every car would also be fitted with a device capable of tracking the car so theft cover should be lower.

And obviously they'd pass on the savings to the consumer!!!

I think the original aim - and the trials - were aimed at younger drivers as a way of reducing their premiums. Why pay the price of covering you for driving 4 mates back from a club at 3am when you only actually drive to work at Burger King during the day on Sunday?

For most people this isn't a viable option. Same principle as when Pay As You Go mobile first came out. So that people who never make calls can have a mobile.

Then there's the old taxation debate (Road pricing / tolls / road tax / fuel duty).
Ban them all and increase the price of petrol!! Then at least the ones who drive the most pay the most. No new (and very expensive) infrastructure is required, and you can cut out all the paperwork involved in tax discs. Maybe replace this with an MOT disc so police / traffic wardens can clamp unroadworthy vehicles.

Phew, that's that sorted, now for the NHS......

The black box mmmm it will lead to:

- Pay as you go insurance
- Pay as you go road use / tolls / road tax
- Speeding detection
- Accident investigation
- Speed limiting

They can get stuffed, this is a shocking way forward.

I think it's a great idea .. they can send me the black box and I'll leave it (the box) in the garage. Free insurance - Yay!

What about foreign cars? So no tax/congestion charge/insurance .. another winner, time to print out some Japenese plates.

Definitely a back way to get black boxes in all cars then:
- speeding fines galore
- ultimately more expensive insurance costs for people who need to use their car to commute a decent distance to work
- easy way to set up tolls for all roads
