Quick spin in a 996
Just done the same thing, but on straight and twisty roads for about 30 miles. Swapped cars with SteveFB, mainly so he could get back into an S and see if he missed it!
My thoughts on the Porker:
*Strangely large steering wheel!
*Slightly odd driving position re: the pedals. Got used to it pretty quickly though.
*Ineffective brakes, when compared to the S. Bit scary when I first came to use them!
*Power is nice!
*Didn't feel as chuckable as the S. Not by a long shot.
*Didn't inspire me to drive quickly, or rev the nuts off it!
*Didn't feel as quick at speed. I got to 110mph (on a private road/race track/airfield yada yada) and thought I was still doing 70. Got a shock when I looked down!
I liked it, but it's obviously a completely different machine to the S, and I wouldn't trade up to one (not that I could afford to).
The twisty Dales roads felt like home to the S. Chucking it around the bends is excellent fun, and the go-kart comment above really rings true.
Completely not so with the 996. Maybe it just takes a lot of getting used to, but it just didn't seem like it belonged there. Hope Steve doesn't mind me saying (
), but he became a speck in the distance pretty quickly on those B-roads. Once I got in the driving seat I could understand why. I didn't feel at ease pushing it as much as the S, and I don't think it was just because it wasn't my car! We've both driven many of these roads in an S, and it just seems a great deal easier, not to mention a shedload more fun, to drive the Honda at speed there than it does the Porsche.
I can see it's appeal, but don't think it suits the same road conditions as the S.
Hope that doesn't come across as too negative.
It is a nice car, without question, but it's not for me.
Enjoy it Steve. You know you want another S though.

I started to comment on the above 2 posts then realised I couldn't have been logged in and my ignore list wasn't working.
Toddle off back to work association of whatever gets posted in P&P these days.
Sorry Nick I wasn't referring to you, I think you know what your talking about

I drove a car and gave my opinion on the experience. Thought that's what this section was all about. At least I said something remotely constructive. Well done for being arrogant and full of it.

Fair point! I didn't have the opportunity to stamp on them, perhaps thankfully.
Just slowing for roundabouts etc. they didn't seem as good. Like I said, I really enjoyed driving it, and was just giving a direct comparison to the S on this occasion. The Porker would probably exceed expectations in a number of driving situations. Just not today. But I was planning a route for an S meet, so it stands to reason really! Had a look around the Porsche garage that I think you got your car from. Lovely place wth some lovely cars! Wouldn't mind a trip there again.
It might take a little while to get used to the Porsche, so maybe that's why Fieldl was being a dick about my comments. It was just a first impression.
Nothing wrong with the car at all. It is just very different to the S. Bits of it I like and bits of it I don't.

The brakes do feel crap if you are not used to them cos they are not servo assisted as much as other cars. However stamp on them and you will go through the windscreen they are a lot better than the S2000's IMO.
