My Dad has a TR5, he's had it since 1972 and he still uses it, he restored the car a few years ago now, it wasn't 20k, although I could imagine cost would run away with a concours one!

I have driven it a fair few times, I don't like it

We heard yesterday that the restorers have the receivers in and were not surprised.

We have been feeling rather uneasy since the firm took on new larger premises and the move didn‘t go to plan, taking too long and affecting production. They have a big bill outstanding which seems to have been the last straw. Six men brought the TR back here unfinished and minus the doors, which Mr Q had to go to Stevenage to collect before the premises are locked down. We have been paying for the work as it has gone along. Our latest injection of cash was £3.000 to cover the cost of painting the bodywork and reassembling the engine and painting that. The bonnet and boot haven’t been painted and the engine is still in bits. We feel fortunate that at least they had the decency to return the car to us. Also we are delighted with the standard of the work that has been completed.

In the fifty years that Mr Q was in business he never had to deal with a situation like this. Any advice on how to proceed regarding the monetary side of things and what to do about getting the car finished would be gratefully received.

That is really bad news. At least you have the car back, get it finished quickly so that it's not hanging around too long risking damage.

Gutted to hear this MQ - I do hope you find somewhere to finish the work. Maybe BOZWELL could help?

Nightmare senario MQ, I feel for you and for everyone at the firm involved. It is good that they brought it back to you but I can't imagine how you must have felt to see it back but in a rather different state than you wanted/expected to see it next.
I hope you get your money back and the car finished just as soon as it is possible for both.

Sorry to hear this MQ. At least you got the car back ...

I personally agree with your approach and try to help trades' cash flow as you did. But too often this all too rare generosity is misplaced and abused, as here. Now I apply a simple rule: do the work, then get paid. With another rule: keep 'em hungry.

Going forward, did you take the details of the guys who returned your car to you? They will have homes and mouths to feed and, ATEOTD, they are the ones with the skills you need and petrol in their blood and are presumably within range of you. Failing which, drop a PM to Boswell and hire a lorry.

Really sorry to hear this MQ - if I thought I could offer any help I would

It sounds as if your trust has been misplaced or at worst abused

I don't think you have much chance of getting any money back unless there is a credit card involved

My focus would be on ensuring you've got every little piece of the car back

It sounds as if there are some people behaving reasonably at the moment, so if there are any bits missing I'd get a van and reclaim them tomorrow at the latest

Leave it any longer and you may find the premises secured, no-one to speak to and any bits gone

It's not the end of the world though - your project can be completed

Try to look at this as a temporary setback, albeit with a price tag

Don't dismiss Rog's advice to contact Bozwell

His workshop's rates are not out of this world

What they do there is

if it was a cash payment i'd be very suprised if you got any back i'm sorry to say. if you paid by card then there may be some hope. the money goes to the fat cats sorting out the recievership then if there is any left it'll go to big buisnesses owed first. the humble customer is the last on the list. many years ago i had to snatch back a car (not my own) for a similar reason before they can be sold off as assets.

sorry to say i wont personally be able to help but i can get some phone numbers for you for people to try in the south east.
