Which satnav
We have a cheapy Garmin unit like the one you are buying Pete.
Does everything just fine.
Have so far used it in UK, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Zimbabwe & US (Texas, Colorado & Florida) without problem.
Next week it will be charged with navigating us around Costa Rica which could be more of a challenge for the poor thing (no official Garmin maps, so have purchased some unoffical ones from Ebay!)

Thanks to CC's recommendation I bought a £50 eBuyer jobbie and hacked Tomtom UK maps onto it for free. Excellent value and, as others say, the last few miles guidance is invaluable, especially finding remote cottages in the dark. My personal likes are (a), taking us safely through complex junctions such as Spaghetti Junction and - my local nemesis - the A14 across Cambridge, and (b), finding 'biker aware' B roads cross country.
On the way back south from the Humber Bridge set for 'shortest route' (which finds all the biker B roads) one irritating quirk was taking us off then on to the dual carriageway again. As the main road was curving to the left, it was shorter to cut across the curve via the slip roads off/then on again
