Arrow Speeding! Just as I was getting a laser detector

Further to my post where I thought I might have got caught by the police I have indeed been caught - 97mph on a Motorway.

I had just joined on a sliproad and was accelerating up to speed - any ideas what I might receive?

Many thanks for your help!

Stupid V8!

If you're lucky 3 points and a £60 fine (which if I were you I would accept)... have they offered you the fixed penalty?

If not up to 6 points (more likely 4 or 5 points) and a few hundred pounds if they request the pleasure of your company in court...

In my experience you can get a better deal if you go to court.

Wear a suit, be polite to the magistrates, don’t make any stupid excuses and you might get a 1 week ban with no points and a few hundred quid fine.
That’s what I got when I was doing 100 on the M5.

Magistrates spend all day dealing with scum, so a suited and booted polite gentleman is often given a warning style of punishment rather than a kick in the balls.

That said, if you get a fixed penalty it’s often better to take it.
From what I understand magistrates don’t like people wasting court time and money by dragging this sort of thing through the courts when it could be dealt with easily.
I only ended up in court because my speed was too high for a fixed penalty.
(laws/policies may have changed)

I was given 3 points and £60 fixed penalty for 97 on the motorway about 18 months ago.

But they'll tell you straight off if you're being offered a fixed penalty.

Thanks for the replies - doesn't look like i'll be getting a fixed penalty as I wasn't offered one just a notice of intended prosecution.

Looks like i'll be going to court!

What speed were you accelerating up to?

Perhaps not.
I think the cops hand you a form first and then it goes to the CPA (or whatever) and they decide whether to send you a fixed penalty or a court summons.

It's not up to the cop in the car to decide.

Hi Rob,

The NIP came through the post - the Cop was standing on a bridge never actually spoke to him.

If you go to court, apart from the other stuff about wearing a suit and being polite, make sure you don’t drive there.
You might get a ban and if you drive then you’ll be buggered.

On the other hand if you drive they may not ban you so as not to make things too difficult for you, but personally I’d rather have a 1 week ban than 6 points – and they don’t give both.
(or didn’t when it happened to me. Times may have changed)
