Default VW Phaeton

So I was originally looking at buying a 435d m sport m performance car, but being self employed and to extent getting older I've more or less decided to spend that money on better things ie on my pension eg renting houses etc.

I can't help look at phaeton v6 tdi (will probably remap) they look cracking value for money and since I do lot of motorway miles seems like the right choice esp being 4wd although mediocre Mpg. After looking at a Bentley Continental Gt mk1 and coming to the conclusion it was a big mistake waiting to happen maybe I'm falling into the same trap, and it's a barge to be avoided?.

Anyone had experience on these? What's toys were extras.

What is the spend difference on a Phaeton vs a 4series BMW?

Break it down for us all please.

I don't think it's any comparison to a 730d of a similar size. 4wd isn't that necessary on a large wafter is it?
Comfort plus reliability is key to these mobile armchairs. Perhaps the Phaeton is the ultimate in boring VAGS - who knows.
But I think VW are far behind the likes of BMW & Mercedes-Benz in this segment. That's why they're cheap IMHO.
Rare car though, not many about.

A 435 is new so expensive.
And much more of a drivers car I'd imagine?

I can imagine it (VW) being expensive in consumables but the lower depreciation would offset that i guess unless you buy recent

Get the 5l v10 tdi if you must buy diesel

Its a badly badged Bentley, another of your ponders.

In doing quite a lot of motorway miles recently and the fabia is tiresome although superb Mpg and same power as a phaeton ha!.

Bmw 435d m sport, as I want the m performance pack which looks great may I add, i haven't seen many on the road is circa 34k 2nd hand private, I loved my old 335d just mpg wasn't brilliant and it wasn't 4wd obviously new one is and they've improved power output and Mpg.

Phaeton is around 8-12k average miles few toys.

That difference could go towards buying a cheap terraced house, doing it up and renting it out, so being self employed I'm starting to think about my pension etc.

The only thing i would say is what's the £ impact to you if it breaks?

You need a backup option if your income relies on it and the car is old

They were all pretty well loaded.

Off my radar now. I think they were a better buy five years ago. Now most are expensive with very high mileage and are not an easy DIY proposition. For similar money I'd go for an S class or 7 series but all barges have very high potential repair costs.

The 7ers can have dodgy door seals and electrical gremlins aren't uncommon. 2009 onwards are the best value models. Love 'em though, ace for long journeys.
Friend has an 11 plate E class, full AMG kit, E250 CDi. Very nicely appointed inside and you arrive feeling special.
