VW Phaeton
An acquaintance of a friend has a Phaeton; he apparently loathes it, mainly because of the rear light units which have failed on a couple of ocassions, and other minor niggles.
He is also struggling to sell it, which says plenty about the market appetite for them.
I have looked at them on a few occasions, but couldn't have a rattler; the W12 is rare, as are other petrol engined versions. A luxo-barge must have a petrol engine IMHO, and ideally a V8.
The specialist I once used for my A8 D2 said the A8 D3 is the vehicle to go for if one is after a great value and reliable barge. I am sure he is correct, but the D3, like the Phaeton, has styling which doesn't do very much for me. I used my D2 recently and when parked in the local Waitrose car park, it was a vision of understated elegance in a sea of ghastly contemporary Range Rovers, Mercedes, Audi's et al.

Indeed; Audis (inter alia) seem to be getting worse as the years go by.
Actually, I was impressed by a neighbour's 340i. Not the DAF 77 one - the Bavarian one. It was in Police-entrapment dark grey, with only a fetching set of 10-spole alloys and a couple of exhaust finishers bizarrely reminiscent of those on the Toyobaru 86. No blingy tinsel badly adjoining the reversing lights, no spray-silvered cladding pointlessly attached to matt black cladding pointlessly attached to the bumper and no tinsel on exaggerated canards there either. It seems as if the Munichmen have spectacularly overlooked every single modern cliche that makes anyone driving a new Range Rover or Mercedes-Benz look like a total cunt. Do they think it's 1986 or something?

I would agree that contemporary Beemers are about the best looking new cars on the road. A friend has a relatively new 520 and it's nice, albeit I struggle to differentiate on the roads between it and a 3 or 7 series...
Bugger-all rear seat legroom in it BTW.

It's so easy to mistake a soot chucker from anything M, subtle air scoops and 'zorst outlets the main visuals from afar. Of course, get closer then it becomes more apparent.
IMO the 7er takes the award for value. 6 yr old examples are circa £10k, a gigantic depreciation on such a capable cruiser. And the plus side - the petrol engines are fairly frugal, for what they are. 730d / 740d though takes some beating for the modern day skinter runner.
Hmmm, thanks for the info.
I'm going to look at one after new year, maybe i could negotiate a good price if they hard to shift.
This fabia is great apart from its tiresome on long journey and i just want something 4wd, comfortable, decent grunt and reasonable to run. Petrol is not viable with the miles even though I'd love to stick an exhaust on one!ha.

But yes the other two seem quite equally as huge.
