Mysterious rear rumbling
Carolina. I wanted to post this here to check the local knowledge before posting on S2000 Talk or Under the Hood. (You guys are a lot kinder with questions that may be considered "common knowledge" to others, but are news to me.) Besides...you're my peeps!
Here's the problem:
While at McDragon a few weeks ago, my MY00 (83k miles) developed a low "rumbling" noise and vibration coming from the rear of the car that initially mimicked the sound of a bad or out-of-round tire. However, the lug nuts were completely torqued, tire pressure and wear were good, and rotors and brakes were performing beautifully. The sound wasn't isolated to any one side.
To compound my confusion, the sound tended to occur only once the car was well warmed-up, and upon strong acceleration under VTEC, usually into uphill turns on the Dragon. It occured a few times on non-Dragon roads, but again, only during acceleration. It hasn't occured once during "daily driving".
Ideas???? Thanks in advance!

"rumbling and vibration coming from the rear", huh? Did ya have Mexican for dinner last night?
Sounds like it could be one of several things: Worn inner CV joints, wheel bearings/hubs, or the rear diff. I generally recommend the cheapest thing first -- swap the inner CV joints right-to-left. I fly out of Charlotte on Monday morning and I'll be driving up Sunday night to crash at my folk's place. I'd be happy to drive it and take a more informed guess.

Sounds like the inner CV joints to me...that's the problem I had with my baby last year...
Unfortunately...they coul;dn't swap 'em from left to right at the dealer because the hubs were "fused" with the axles...
That repair job was a whopping $2,300!

Honestly, I think I can rule out the diff issues from what I just went through. The sound I had in the parking lot after the Wingate parade was a diff failing and it was much more of a whine then a rumble. That doesn't mean that every diff fails that way but the sound seems very different and in different situations.
From what I have read about our precious MY00s, I have to agree with what Highlander and AIRGATE! have said.
On a side note it seems that Crown has already seen your car too much. Sorry to hear that you are having more issues.

Yeah, I don't think the guys at Crown want to see me (or Ron!) again for a while.
Bryan, thanks for the offer! We'll be at the house pretty much all day Sunday. Give us a call if you're not too tired or get in too late. My new cell #: 704-208-9873.
