Unkie, did you celebrate MLK day?
I listened to a few excerpts from his speeches on NPR this morning. . . on my way to work.

(FYI: $2500/mo. is what I pay on my mortgage, give or take. . . ahem)
So, I'm not a big video nut. My main reason being is that I'm color blind, and so much of the top end stuff regarding color is lost on me. . . which means though, I shell out decent money for audio equipment.
2 excellent channels will trump 3.1 most of the time. The only time it doesn't is when the room is so big, that people are sitting in very disparate spots and can't hear both the left and right channels clearly.
The gains in raw sound from multiple drivers in a 3.1 system do not trump the coherency and imaging of fewer drivers in a 2 channel system.
As with vehicles - really, honest-to-God set your budget before you put the whole system together.
. . . oh yeah, and the Oppo is a DVD player. . . or, if you just want to use a computer, use a computer.

What's funny is renting in the city and buying in the city cost about the same if you buy in areas like the sunset (2b 2ba for like $480-580k). But I'll cross that bridge when I get there.
Hmm makes sense... I'm color blind too
. Do you suggest multiple bookshelf speakers, or just a pair? Also if I were to encase them in the wall (I'm really in to the built in look--and obviously if it's allowed) does that affect the sound any?As for budget, obviously furniture would come first (and wtf it's expensive
) but I guess for everything I'd want to spend ~$1500 (obviously I'll be buying a used TV).Lease is up in August, starting to save now, well.. after my $405 registration and my $700 owed in taxes

Past that, if you want "built-in," then buy built-in speakers (and prepare to pay). You can also put bookshelves on the countertop/shelf, but; A.) they won't sound their best, B.) you should at least uncouple them from the shelf itself using Blue-Tac or spikes
My suggestion, given your budget, is:
PSB Alpha LR1 - $200/pr.
Onkyo or Denon receiver - ~$300
DVD player - $99?
Expand and build up when you can.
BTW, stick to Ikea and the like for furniture. . . don't buy fancy furniture for a home you're renting. . . but that's my opinion (and it ain't popular).
stealth edit that i did about 10 seconds too late:
(Edit: There's some sick ass lofts for <$320k in oakland. That's CHEAP (seeing's how places in fremont are around $500k)
But moving on, I'll look those up. My only thing about buying nice
