coupler is def. the simplest option. i did that in the ol' college townhouse, running ethernet cables down the stairs from the router to the xbox...

as 8d said if you have more devices you need the switch. also the switch will boost your signal, coupler won't (8d correct me if i'm wrong on that).

cat 5 is old scool, 5+ is home despot grade. The switch is great for controlling multiple floors, etc. But for him? Meh..
