Hmmm...rotary upgrade, huh? What rotary would you suggest for such a project, Martin? NA or turbo? This sounds more interesting than some of the other options I've considered...

First question is what's the intended use for this car? Street? Some autox? Track days? The other is, how much do you want to tinker with it? Or just drive it every day?

I'd go with a N/A 13b peripheral port motor, keyed crank, oil injectors if you're driving daily. The only other option is the full sequential turbo lifted out of a Gen3 - complete with engine controls. Keep that stock, be ready to replace the turbo's, make sure to have some ignition cut-off timer for cooldowns.

Now, if it's going to be a trailer monster, track days or autox, I'd see about getting a motor from Mandeville or Downing

Mostly street with some autox and a couple track days a year. I'll tinker as much as I need to, but mostly want to drive...

I'm going round and round with this decision. Need to sort out the car situation for many reasons...

what about a 20B n/a brant???? the only problem I can see is the low compression...... I don't recall the highest compression rotors available, maybe about 10:1 or a little over.... not too bad..... I don't see why you couldn't make over 300 hp with one of those.... they NA 13B from '89 up was making 180 stock...... I miss my rotary, what a cool freaking engine... you could easiely have it setup to surpass 9000 rpm.... what a mean machine that would be

Martin's right on the money... it would be a mean machine. And the rotary can be quite reliable IF you spend great attention to the tuning...

Good question. In mild tune, you ought to be able to get 200~220. We were getting 300~320 typically, a qualifying motor 340 hp.

You don't want to drive a well-prepped spec miata on the streets. For starters, you'd have no lights (except for rain/brake). And it would be way too noisy.

Like the rotary would be stealth LOL
