Doc, why does consumption of too much and result in an excruciating headache???
The Doc says:

The act of consuming too much alcohol indeed often leads to an excrutiating headache, or as we like to call it, a hangover. The reason for the headache is an actual swelling of the brain. This explains the intense feeling of your head being ready to explode if exposed to loud sounds or vibration. The swelling is caused by a rush of blood from the lower extremities into the cranial cavity. This rush is brought on by the intake of the alcohol. Alcohol is thinner than blood, so when ingested, it runs directly to the feet, and begins to gradually fill the body. This also explains the loss of coordination and walking skills being one of the more noticeable early effects of inebriation. As more alcohol is consumed, more blood is forced upward as the liquor settles. Eventually, the added liquids into the body create high-sustained pressures. Liquid, unlike gasses, cannot compress, thus creating outward pressure upon the containg device... in this case, the human body. The brain is one of the most sensitive areas, so the pressure is felt here most substantially.

The term 'hangover' comes from 20th century Ohio, where a common method of torture was to hang somebody, by their feet, over a ledge or roof top. While hanging upside down, blood would rush to the victims head, causing great pain for extended periods of time. Eventually, this torture method would result in loss of the majority of brain function, limiting the victims career choices to those within the engineering fields. Considered cruel and inhumane, this method was banned late last year. It wasn't until earlier this week that the cranial pain was associated with post drinking recovery periods. Upon discussion, it was unanimously decided at a John's Hopkins research facility that this post drinking cranial discomfort should be called a 'hangover' in honor of the now banned torture method.

Or you could just be dehydrated. Drinking PLENTY of water before going to bed, through the night and in the morning usually prevents mine from even happening.

Clearly a function of the reduced brain functions.

It is indeed a pity that the lower rungs on the evolutionary ladder are often compelled to speak out when they cannot see the plain and simple facts displayed before them. Mother seems to be agitated that she has not received the expected response from the esteemed corner physician. Unfortunately, in this line of work it is more improtant to report the truth, rather than telling someone what they want to hear. In MOM's case, her sore throat is causing her distress and physical discomfort. She is unwilling to believe scientific fact, and chooses to believe old wives tales about gargling a known numbing agent in her area of pain to aid in easing the discomfort. She probably also believes that over-the-counter medications such as Chloroseptic would help, but that is not true either. Probably the most ludicrous of these beliefs, is thinking that consuming an abundance of low-sugar, vitamin-rich caffeine-free liquids, thus flushing the system and bringing about a speedy recovery. Nonsense, all nonsense.
