I actually have lots of experience in this sort of thing, having reared three children and provided spurious explanations for all sorts of phenomena over the last twenty years or so. It was mainly done to instill a healthy skepticism in the little ones, to make certain that they would begin to think logically for themselves, rather than take the word of others as gospel; the entertainment value I derived from it was (clearly) never intended and was, therefore, a lagniappe.

This approach is not without its risks, however; the reader is cautioned from trying this at home without professional guidance. My (then) four-year-old son once asked why the lids to the plastic trashcans were broken. I explained that an elephant had sat on this one and a hippopotamus on that one and that's how they they got broken; surely an easier explanation for a four-year-old to understand than the evaporation of solvents in plastic and photochemical effects and so on. A couple of months later I was telling a neighbor that I'd told my son that an elephant had sat on the trashcan lid. My son was there. He said, "No, dad. The elephant didn't sit on that one. He sat on this one. The hippo sat on that one. Remember?"
