Select the iPod on the left pain, then check "Manually Manage Music and Videos."

Well, you kinda need iTunes in order to play the iPod through your computer....

But you can also tell iTunes not to open when you hook up your iPod (it's an option within iTunes).

If you go to My Computer (assuming you're running a Windows computer), you will see your iPod listed as a portable hard drive. Double click on that and you'll be able to access the folder(s) with all the music. You can then use Winamp or something to play those files.

There are two drawbacks:

1) the filenames are like GJVOPL.mp3 - so you don't really know what song it is unless you have the folder options set to View/Details (and you have the appropriate information set for that song).

2) there are multiple folders and no rhyme/reason to how they are organized. So one album can be spread out amongst multiple folders.

I would also be leary of removing the songs from your 'puter. Technically you are prevented from extracting the songs back OFF of the iPod if you ever wanted the files back. (There are hacks to be able to do it, but it's kind of a PITA.)

^ You just look at the iPod like a hard drive and do some hunting for the songs you want. It's actually quite easy to get into the iPod and pull the songs off of it. Finding one song in particular out of thousands is the PITA part.

Well, OK, but then you lose the name of the file and any folder structure that it was in before you put it on the iPod (Like Genre/Artist/Album folders.)

Like I said: PITA.

Manual Management will allow you to drag and drop songs from your iTunes libraray to the iPod. Also, if you delete the song from iTunes, it will not delete it from the iPod.

If you uncheck a song, it will leave it in the library in iTunes, but remove it from the iPod.
