The Semi-Official Hockey Thread...
I've had this discussion with my son about how bad the refs are in the NHL, and then he brings up the NBA & I realize how bad bad can be!
Even so, it's frustrating especially when it's your team getting the raw end.

Indeed. I've already confessed to you my great sin... that of having been a ref (
)... still it puts me in the position of anyone who understands the rules. I marvel and wince at the things I see them wave off.
I can't imagine what they must be told to call and NOT to call.
What if... just what if, they called ALL of the rules? Would the sky fall? I don't think so. I think you'd just see better hockey and happier (knowledgable) fans. The only thing I can figure is that the refs flout the rules to please and attract the boney-browed masses who don't understand the finesse of hockey and instead love the brutality.
Don't get me wrong... I LOVE the bone crunching checks that rattle the glass and leave the hapless victim struggling to get up. I love a delicate sliding poke check from fully a stride behind that also (and this is legal as long as you take the puck first) takes out the feet of the attacker.
I think it's cool that Bobby Baun played a full period in the '60s with a broken leg... scoring the winning goal. (He wouldn't let them take and x-ray at the intermission because he knew they'd send him to hospital)
It's a tough man's game... but shouldn't be a goon's game.

And WTF is that thing ESPN does?... "Sundin now on ice"... is that supposed to get people all excited or something? And why do they expect people will MISS the fact that Sundin is on the friggin ice?

Man, you've been reading my mind. It's like hockey for idiots!
Next, they'll be telling you each time the puck changes possesion:
Controling team: Flyers
Controling team: Leafs
Controling team: Flyers
Controling team: Leafs
(notice I made it even)
And yeah, I know I'm not supposed to admit this, but I like Don too. He's a character (even though he's a little
strange) in an otherwise drap & boring sports scene.

LOL!! Yeah he's a nut. I love him for speaking his mind. Man does he ever do that.
I saw another good one on Sunday night.... (I don't always notice this stuff... I'm just watching the game)
[ Leafs - White sweaters ]
[ Senators - Red sweaters]
